Fear of being close to Mexico?

I am planning a stop to Big Bend NP in TX. I have some relatives who are, lets say overly cautious and are worried about my safety being on the border of Mexico. Should I be concerned? Even vigilant? Because I have not been, but don't know if I am being naive

Thanks

The article in the link provide by Old Car Nut is dated June 26, 2010 and is about Federal land closed in 2006 in Arizona. I would not cancel a stop to Big Bend NP in Texas just because it is "to close to Mexico". No matter where you are in this country today you should always be aware of your surroundings and if you do not feel comfortable then leave. If you are in the area stop by The McDonald Observatory in Ft. Davis

spsm: Back in the days of the old west, if you wore a big pistol on your hip it was referred to as "wearing a hog leg"!

If that were the case a city like San Diego would not be the RV place to be that it is. On the outskirts of San Diego in the County jurisdictions there are thousands of million$+ homes within walking distance from the Mexico Border. With that being said, several years ago(and maybe still today) the area you are talking about had a lot of trafficking by the Drug Traffickers bringing cocaine ect up from the Mexican border. Just be wise as previously mentioned, pay attention to your surroundings and me personally I would not leave my MH unattended for any significant length of time. We will be traveling thru that same area this spring.

Last year did the Big Bend and well worth it. Did not see a mexican. There for two days and back trailed. Just got back from Zapata foe two week stay. The police, the Highway patroll, border patrol, would not worry.

The issue is still there. The situation has not improved but rather become much worse. Would I go there? Sure. Armed and alert.

It's been a couple of years now, but we visited Big Bend NP and never felt uncomfortable. We even traveled the length of the Old Maverick Road...never saw a soul.

Dangerous activity can be mobile and usually travels in the path of least resistance, so vigilance is always a good practice. Checking in at the park's visitors center might help with any of your safety concerns.

Big Bend was never a major corridor for the narcos. South of Tucson was where a lot of the activity was along with east of El Paso.
