Fires Near Creede, CO?

We plan to head there soon and am wondering if anyone is in the area for a smoke/fire report.

as of today you will be OK,fires ar mostly east of Creed and our prevaling winds are west to east. There are a couple of fires down near Cortez & Durango but we have not experienced any smoke in the San Juans, yet. Come on, visit Colorado, but be forewarned we are having a very hot summer.

We have been in Creede since May 1st. There are no fires near Creede, but when the wind is blowing NW we have gotten smoke from the Pagosa Springs fire. It sesms to have been much less prevalent this last week. The weathe at 8852 ft has been averaging around 78-80, so very nice.

We plan to be in Creede beginning on July 20th and spend a month there. I.e., if I don't get too bored. How long are you planning to stay?

We spent a week in Creede recently, and the haze in the afternoon was so thick you could taste it as well as see it. Fortunately, as mentioned, the winds blow west to east, and the smoke will eventually clear out during the day.

We live in Pagosa Springs, CO, just west of Creede. The smoke is from the Little Sand Fire, just north of our home, that has grown to nearly 24,000 acres. As of this posting, the fire is 34% contained, and still going, although the smoke has decreased drastically. This picture is from about a week and a half ago, with our home on the left.

There are several large fires WEST of Creede near Pagosa, Durango and south of Mesa Verde, but the containment on these fires is growing quickly. By the time you arrive on July 20th I doubt there will be any problem with smoke and haze.

Do NOT let this stop you. Creede is a beautiful place with lots of history, the Rio Grande River, lots of hiking trails, and great fishing. If you're Johnny Depp, Creede is a great place to film your new movie, "The Lone Ranger". The film crew was there and a lot of them were in the RV park where we stayed.

Don't miss the drive over Slumgullion Pass to Lake City - an absolutely gorgeous place! Along the way, there's a monument to Alferd Packer's five victims, who were consumed by Mr Packer after they were trapped by a blizzard many years ago. It's interesting to note that the University of Colorado named the student dining hall the "Alferd Packer Restaurant and Grill".

If you're interested in shopping, the stores and galleries in Creede are excellent. And, the Creede Repertory Theater is nationally known for their live performances in the historic Creede Hotel.

Have fun - we're going back to Creede too!

Yes.... the picture of the smoke was typical.... but, I have to say we have NOT had ANY smoke in over a week. The wind has shifted directions. We are here for 5 months, May 1st thru Oct 1st. Getting all my decorations ready for the 4th of July parade... we ride our RZR in it...
If you get bored here in a week, then you really need hobbies. I fish, ride the RZR, Jeep on all the outstanding trails... In fact did a quick ride to Silverton a couple of days ago... from here, by Stony Pass Trail it is just under 38 miles!!! The American Basin, the Alpine Loop... hopefully you have a 4X4.... and if you don't.... you can ride Bachelor Loop out of Creede in a car... very pretty. The Disney folk have just about all packed up, (filming the Johnny Depp movie the Lone Ranger).... the plastic Train's have gone.... The Rubber Rocks are gone..... You get to see the realy thing now.... LOL

Would love to be there for the 4th of July parade. We were there 5 years ago and had more fun at that parade.

Bob, we will have our Jeep Wrangler with us so perhaps we can get together and run a few trails together. Let me know which site you are in. By private email if you prefer. BTW, we plan to be there for a month.

Old Dude, we are in 307, the new section. There is a planned Jeep ride every week here hosted by Gary Van Der Starre in site 274. Lot's of fun rides.
Be sure to look Gary up also,, if we are not around, he can steer you to the best trails. We also ride our RZR quite a bit....

We are up early decorating for the 4th of July Parade....
