First come/first serve Washington campgrounds

My husband and I are new to the area (PNW - specifically Washington) and are wondering how the first come/ first serve typically works out during the peak summer months? We travel with 2 children, 7 and 1.5 so we don't want to be searching for a place late in the evening. In the past we have tended to go with reservation only places because of this. But NP tend to be deeper in nature which we prefer but we are weary of the often posted first come first serve only. Are there typically spots available on a weekend or could we run into trouble?

The WA State Parks website has a reservations system for almost every SP. We've used it frequently for the more popular ones. I haven't used it yet this year, but I doubt they've dropped it.

There are so many "deep in nature" SPs, we've not bothered with the National Parks very much.

I suggest you carry a laptop, tablet, or smart phone so you can get on the Washington St. Parks website. It allows you to reserve specific sites available and is very nicely done.

Oregon State Parks also has a wonderful on line campsite reservation, showing open campsites, even pictures of the sites.
Oregon State Parks and Recreation

I wish other states did as well as these two!

Well I would say without reservations in any national park in high season you will be at Walmart for the night. Even the first come you better be in line before checkout time or again Walmart. Now the bright side is IF you make reservations or do a bit of scouting there are many many national forest spots along rivers (boy watch the kids) and just in the forest On White Pas and Chinook Pass hyways that are great. Also up Bumping and American rivers, Rimrock lake are great sites and all but FREE. Now a holiday weekend be there two days early for the free sites or forget it. The Olympic pen. also has lots of free or very low cost nature type sites.
