would like to hear from folks that have gone to yellowstone ! we want to go from jacksonville out ! anybody got some pointers ect poi we will be staying at walmarts on the way out or flying j s whats a good campground once we are there ect ? thanks

If you need FHU's then West Yellowstone is most likely your best spot. There are several campgrounds inside YNP but are primitive and first come first served.

We are presently camped at Lions Head RV park. It is seven miles west of West Yellowstone on Hwy 20. We have full hookups, good WiFi and beautiful scenery. There are several RV parks on Hwy 20 west of West Yellowstone. The parks we saw in town are really cramped. You can go online and check out Woodall's directory. A good information resource for RV parks is: campgroundreviews.com. I've found this to be really good for what the place is really like. Folks that have stayed at a particular place, review that place. Anyone can do a review so opinions vary a lot. However, when several reviewers say pretty much the same thing, You can figure that they are on to something. BTW you will need to post campgroundreviews.com into your browser as this is not a link.

We stayed at the north entrance Rocky Mountain Campground - Gardiner, Montana

There are two loops at Yellowstone the north and the south. The north loop is the primary wildlife area and the south loop is the thermal area. The south loop has two construction areas this summer causing huge traffic problems. The west side is the most popular side to stay, I think because it's closest to the major population centers. We enjoyed the north side most. There is plenty of empty state park camping along the east entrance road that looked nice although we did not stay there.

We're further south in FL that you, in the Orlando area, but we did a big trip out west in April-June this year. The end of our trip was Yellowstone, Devils Tower, Black Hills of SD, Sioux Falls, Omaha, St. Louis, Cave City (KY), Cloudland Canyon (GA), and home to Orlando. I think all the places we stopped on the way back were great.
In Yellowstone we stayed in Fishing Bridge and loved it, the only problem was that it was cold, snow on ground just about every morning. Not having electricity was a bit of pain in that situation but we still enjoyed it tremendously.
In the Black Hills we stayed a Rafter J. From what I hear this is a popular campground, and we loved it. In Omaha we stayed at Mahoney state park, and outside St. Louis we stayed at Babbler state park. In Cave City, KY we stayed at the Jellystone, a mistake we won't make again. Cloudland Canyon State Park in north-west GA is a favorite of ours so it was our last stop before heading home.

You must be in a big hurry to stay in parking lots, lot of fun there.

On our trip out from Georgia, we stayed a few days in Chattoogna, a few days in Nashville, And several other really nice towns on out.

The most memorable was few days in North Platte, Nebraska and Cheyenne Wyoming.

Took us about 2 weeks to get out but we visited some really nice places and met some really remarkable people. Didn't meet anybody at any of the wal-marts we visited that I would want to visit again, wait a minute, there was a really pretty wal-mart in Rock Springs but we passed it up and went on to Jackson.

very interesting weve never been on a trip like this so it ought to be interesting dont know that we will just stay in the parking lots lol im just looking to get us there where we will do a lot of hiking ect i know we will stop in kansas city for sure every where else we will be trying to figure it out we actually have not done very many trips in our rv this will be the biggest for sure i sure do appreciate the input

Whenever we go to YNP we stay in West Yellowstone at Grizzly RV Park. Beautiful park with FHU, grass, level sites and good WiFi. Always had good Internet speed with the Verizon aircard. A short walk to the metro area of West.

Dave, I hope your trip is planned for next year. Things in and around Yellowstone are already closing down for the 2010 season.

Bob what exactly does that mean ? we were looking to go in a few weeks i heard the weather comes quick but what is shutting down plse explain thanks bob also then when is a good time to to do this trip ?

Only Encore park we've ever stayed in is the one in Salt Springs, at least I think that was an Encore park. We tend to be State and County park campers for most of our local trips. In the Orlando area it depends on what you want to do. If you're theme park oriented, the city's Bill Fredrick Turkey Lake Park is convenient to Universal and I-Drive and Lake Louisa State Park is fairly good to get in the back door of Disney. To just relax in the summer we like to head up to Kelly Park/Rock Springs to camp for the weekend.

After seeing BigSkyBob use the words "metro area" and "West Yellowstone" in the same sentence and getting a good laugh, I realized I could expand on our Yellowstone experience a bit. We came in from the west and spent one night in West Yellowstone before heading into Yellowstone to camp at Fishing Bridge. If we were to go back (or more positively WHEN we go back), we think we'd like to move around Yellowstone. If we came from the west, we'd probably spend a couple of nights in West Yellowstone with all the comforts of home and go in and do Old Faithful and a some of the west side of the park along with enjoying the metro area of West Yellowstone. Then we'd move to Mammoth for a couple of days, maybe a couple of nights in Canyon and/or Fishing Bridge before heading out the east entrance. We think that would make for shorter days, as it was there were a couple of days were we spent 8-9 hours in the car driving around the park.

As to the closings, look at the National Park page here. It looks like the first big round of closings is Sept. 6 and by the end of Sept. most of the campgrounds are closed.
