You'll be OK at Boyd's ---- If you have bikes, short ride to Duval St and Old Town. Otherwise, you can rent bikes/scooters,golf carts or take a bus or taxi.

Near Boyd's are a couple good seafood restaurants - Rusty Anchor and Hogfish Grill. Since they are a bit out of the way, they don't get as large of crowds you will see in KW

You are correct in that they are trying to get approval for a resort. There is a meeting in downtown Marathon on 8 September and people hope to get some information. As it sits right now, they are accepting reservations through the end of May 2016 while they try and figure out what is happening.

It is all about money unfortunately. Developer wants to put in expensive, exclusive resort on prime real estate. Locals and Gov't are split, some wanting greater tax base which a campground will not provide, Others want it to remain as it is. Visitors want a pleasant, less expensive alternative to KOA, Sunshine Key, etc.

The entity with the most lobbying money and money to, shall we say, "grease the wheels" will prevail. Some of the local "wheels" are trying to get re-elected/re-appointed, but with enough "grease" to be had, they can probably be convinced.

In the meantime, it appears that at least until this Spring, Knights Key campground will remain open.

Winter is the busy season for the Keys so none of the campgrounds will be locked up. Usually you can get a spot at Boyds or Bluewater Key. Even when they are busy they still have cancellations on the regular. I also like the Jolly Roger RV park in Marathon, it was a great park with a fishing pier, diving area and boat dock. Take a spotlight on the dock at night and watch the nurse and lemon sharks swim by. We saw several 6+ footers which was really cool.

Depends. Elks campground was empty 10 days ago when we came by. We stayed there one year in early Dec. Jan & Feb, they're full up. FYI, the Elks are at Key Largo so around a hundred miles from Key West.

When we lived in South Florida we called it Key Waste because of the locals there.

I have always wondered if alcoholism the key west disease that many talk about?

I have spent time at Boyd's, blue water jet and the koa.... Blue water is w/o a doubt the nicest however I do not believe they accept class C rv's as well as rv's under 30ft? When I stayed there I arrived just before midnight and the managers of the place couldn't believe how quiet my RV was. Theynsaudntheynhave never had a RV pull in that was so quiet.... My response was its not a 40-45ft diesel pushed with 500+ hp

Boyd's is great especially being so much closer to KW. Short jog or bike ride to KW and as others stated scooter or cart rental can go you to the island.

He koa was also nice, has more stuff for kids to do as well as a marina for boat rental and supplies.

If you have time Flagler beach just above Daytona is a worthwhile camping area to visit for a night or two
