Florida keys in the winter?

I'm not interested in spending the entire winter, or even a month in the Keys. But, I would like to visit Key West at some point in the winter and stay in a campground in the vicinity for 2 or 3 nights.

Is that something that can be done or are all the available campgrounds and campsites locked up for the winter months?

Last winter I wanted to go down for a couple days. There would be two RV's I could find a couple parks that had one site. Never found any that had two sites for two or three nights. This was in Late February. We were just calling a couple days in advance.

So I would say that it be easy to find a space now. Be harder as time gets closer to Jan & Feb.

If you can go the first two weeks of December you should be fine. Christmas and later will be really difficult.

The only available campgrounds should be reserved soon. 2-3 nights won't be a problem, but expect at least $100 a night. Forget trying to get into state parks, it won't happen.

If you are planning to go to KW, look at Blue Water Key - for 2-3 nights should be able to find a spot- get on a list for cancellations if need be. If you are 40 ft or less, Boyd's is also an option . El Mar should also be considered.
Lots of people make reservations and for one reason or another, end up cancelling. If you are flexible in your travel plans, you should be able to get a spot.
Year before last, on a lark, we called Blue Water a couple days before xmas and was able to get a spot -- headed right down the next day

Firstly, I suggest you create a signature with a description of your RV. This will help people respond with information that will be more specific to your needs.

You might try Curry Hammock state park in Marathon, in spite of the accurate notion that getting into a state park this close to winter is typically going to be futile. We spent a week in the keys last March and when we visited Curry Hammock they had a lot of empty spaces, most big rig friendly. It's a relatively new park so many may simply may not be aware of it yet. You'll be about an hour drive from Key West.

Blue water key is beautiful, but you'll pay $160 per night.

We stayed at Sunshine Key RV resort, about 45 minutes from Key West. You might look there.

Good luck!

we stay on Marathon, at the Jolly Rodger, Passport America accepted, usually make reservations in Sept for early March. Usually stay 10 days to two weeks. Catch the shuttle bus to Key West on Marathon for $1.50...spend the entire day in Key West and ride the shuttle back! Also in March there is a fantastic Seafood Festival on Marathon!!

We're currently at Knights Key Resort and Marina in Marathon. We stayed here in February as well. Nice park, electric and water, dump station. They will dump your black/grey on-site with a honey bucket truck for $10. Cheaper than Sunshine Key, and a little less trashy.

Make reservations now. Living in FL we are seeing a huge increase in winter visitors due to the terrible winters back to back up north. There will be even more next season.

One park in Port Charlotte went minimum one month stays this year. That will put even more of a burden on parks that take short term stays during season.

I emailed all the campgrounds you mentioned and Boyd's got right back to me. As my dates were flexible they were able to get me a site for the number of nights I was looking for in my date range in February. Reservation made and I'm ready to go.

Thanks for the info!

Keep in mind you will need a park that has a shuttle to Key West or is on a bus route. No RVs allowed in city of Key West.
