Florida Keys State park reservations?

We go every year to the Florida Keys for vacation and stay at a private CG. Don't mind the price for the 3-4 weeks but after retirement would like to stay much longer and the state parks there are not only beautiful but very reasonable. The only problem I see is that it is a mystery, to me anyway, how you get a reservation in winter months. Any date I pick at Reserve America is booked. I recall the ranger at Curry Hammock telling us that there is a magic number of days ahead you need to reserve online like 300? He also said forget about calling because you will only get a busy.

We have visited Pennecamp, Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda. All beautiful but Bahia Honda is spectacular. So does anyone know the secret to getting reservations at these parks? You can share, I won't tell a soul

The Policy is:

Booking Window

Sun Jan 10 2010 - Thu Dec 09 2010 Reservations must be made 1 day(s) ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 month(s) in advance.

Hope this helps. In addition, if you are staying several months most of the private parks provide a discount for monthly and seasonal.

Jim

Thanks Jim,
I get that part. I guess what I am trying to figure out is how to reserve a couple of weeks. The impression I get talking with folks down there is that you have to be online right at midnight exactly 11 months to the day ahead to get a reservation. Or something crazy like that. If that is the case how can you reserve more than one day at a time? I just attempted to get a reservation at Bahia Honda for Jan 8-9 2011, that is as far out as you can reserve on Reserveamerica. Booked, not one site. So somehow these lucky campers got in. We would like to join in.

I may have to set the alarm clock for midnight to see if anything is available for 1/10/2011

That's the bottom line. I've started calling the 800 number for the Texas Parks and Wildlife and booking reservations direct with them. Reserve America not only charges the $9, they don't have a clue about the status of most parks.

Maybe FL has a similar number.

From the State Park link --

"
Visitors to Florida State Parks can now reserve campsites, cabins as much as 11 months in advance, by dialing our toll-free numbers 1-800 326-3521 and 1-866-ICAMPFL. If you prefer, you can make your reservation online at:
http://www.ReserveAmerica.com
"

If you use Reserveamerica ( I do) you can reserve up to 2 weeks at one shot. You do have to get on there 11 months in advance... I think you can't reserve until 7:00 or 8:00 am of the day 11 months ahead . While it's a pain, it's doable as we get sites in the keys every year. They also hold some sites for walk-up people ( call the indiviual park for info on that) and I've had pretty good luck just checking a few times a day for cancellations

Yes, popular parks need advanced planning. "the early bird gets the worm". Here in Ohio there one or 2 parks where you need to reserve the max. 6 months early to get a site. I have been known to have 2 cell phones in hand calling at 7am. (6 months before the date of arrival). If it is a popular weekend I would need to reserve the Wed. or Thur. before the weekend event or holiday to even get in. So for next winter now is the time to plan.... If your retired, long range reservations are in the cards much easier. I'm fortunate I can lock my vacation weeks in by Jan. 1st.
