Sorry for the generic subject line! We are leaving this weekend on an exploration trip to Florida. Leaving Tulsa & heading to Lake Charles, LA to visit friends then following the coast east to Florida and ultimately exploring the keys. We know that it is unrealistic to think we could get space at an RV park on the keys, but thought we might try to set up "base camp" someplace and just take day trips in the Jeep (with the doggies) and check out the Parks along the keys to pick a place (or2) for next year. Any suggestions as to where we might be able to get a spot that is not far from the keys?

Thanks!
Michele

Some folks find it OK to homebase in Homestead or Florida City. Being from So FLA I wouldn't drive through those places at night yet alone sleep there. I would get on the computer and make reservations right in the Keys. This is the season and it won't be cheap but it beats driving back and forth on US 1. There are a number of suggestions on this page that are really good. You don't tell us how long you are staying. Our State Parks have good to great camp sites with full hook ups. Look them up am Myflorida.com. Broward County has Markham Park and CB Smith with full hook ups. Good luck but make a reservation first.

Thanks for the replies! We are planning to spend about 1 1/2 weeks in Florida - arriving late next week. If you (D in Davie) think that we might be able to find someplace in the keys that would be great and I will look into it! Didn't figure it was even worth making phone calls to places down there at this late date!

Thanks for the info & the welcome!

Michele

Just left Jolly Roger RV Park in Marathon. If you have Passport America, call them and see if they have space. 5 nights max at $30 a night plus tax. Very noisy sites facing street for PA people, but close to all Keys stuff. John

Thanks for the tip MrG! We rented a house for a week on the Gulf side of Marathon key in 2001. Loved the key and had several (good) restaurants in walking distance from the house, along with our own dock for fishing! Rented a Mustang Convertible and went all over the keys. Mike has been talking about renting that house just to have an electric source to hook up the motorhome :-). Can you tell we are desperate to get away from the cold! Don't have (or know of) Passport America but will look into it if it will help us get a spot.

Thanks again!
Michele

Try this http://www.bluewaterkey.com/old/home.htm
or Geiger key Marina. Both close to KW

Hondo122, Thanks for the suggestions! I had ruled out Bluewater RV because I read in a thread that they have a 2 dog limit. I just called them to confirm and it is true. :-(. We have 3 pound puppies:
1) Tundra, 12, German Shepherd/Malamute mix 107#
2) Marley, 11, Border collie/Lab (maybe) 60#
3) Kemah, 4, Golden retriever?/little dog 55#(body of a big dog w/little short legs & a smallish head).

Zeus is Adorable!

I will search on Geiger key marina - couldn't find them in Woodall's.

Thanks again!
Michele

We really like the Fiesta Key KOA just south of Islamorada. They are a little expensive compared to parks farther north, but I guess it's reasonable by Keys standards. Their waterfront sites are gorgeous.

We stayed at Boyds near Key West before, too, but our "waterfront" was more of a Mangrove swamp.

We will be staying at Fiesta Key in March.

Have fun; I am so cold right now I wish we were going.
