Florida State Parks

I'm looking at staying in various Fl. State Parks after Jan 1, looking at the state booking site it seems like there is not much left for camp sites for my 34' motorhome. Do they leave sites open for people showing up at the last minute or am I pretty much out of luck? I waited to long to book

They do leave spaces for last minute people but I wouldn't bet the ranch on getting one. Reserves at the Florida SP are harder and harder to come by, your allowed 11 mts in advance to make them so I suggest 11mts and 2 seconds to be on line making your planes. I'am at the point of using private CG's for the 2 mts we stay down there, and thats coming from someone who has been using the FSP system for the past 20+ years.

Most, but not all, Florida state parks leave a few sites for "walk-in."

That said getting one, in winter, is hit or miss, especially on weekends. Get to the park earlier in the day will increase your chances.

Happy camping.

That's rough winging it like that, we much prefer state campgrounds over private and having everything set before arrival, I guess this year we'll try our luck, there's always Walmart!

Florida is not a friendly state to boondock in. Most cities have ordinances against it. I'd check ahead of time to see it is permissible in the area you are going.

What part of Florida are you going. We got lucky and found open sites at Jonathan Dickenson State Park near Jupiter, they were booked but had open sites normally reserved for people with horses, which suited us fine.

You may also check the Corp of Engineer campground scattered across Florida, these are usually smaller.

Good Luck

We were thinking of around St Augustine and heading down the east coast and back up the west coast to the panhandle, trying to stay warm heading west. We never thought finding campgrounds would be a problem, its all a learning experience!

As you now realize it's very difficult to find a site during our high season. We have been somewhat successful going on the website every day and have occasionally lucked out right behind someone who just canceled, even for weekend days. As someone else said, you can try walk-ins but that's hit or miss.

With last years cold winter, the snowbirds this year are the most I have seen and the earliest in 25 years. If there is any State parks with openings it will be a miracle.

We had the same problem a few years ago when we went to Ft Lauderdale, Florida for a cruise. Found a very nice county park....Markham Park.

http://www.broward.org/parks/Markham...s/Default.aspx

If you have pets...be careful. There are alligators in the water that goes by the park and they WILL eat your pet.

Is there a reason why most of the state parks along the east coast are booked up while the ones along the panhandle all seem to have open sites? Is there something about those parks that I'm missing, they seem pretty nice.

Going into winter, most parks are filled up starting in the Keys and moving north. The further north you go the better chance you have of getting a spot, but also the colder it is.

You are right they are great parks, just colder in the winter.

Happy camping
