Florida to Elkhart IN Fair Grounds

Will be heading to the Fall Thor Diesel Club Rally in late Sept from West Central Florida to Elkhart IN. Using google maps looks like the most direct route is US 98 to 280/520 to US 27 which are 4 lane. Then around Danville KY looks like smaller 2 lane roads till 421 to 3. For us this is not a problem since time is no concern and we prefer the back roads to freeways, it's way more beautiful out there on the country side. Not to sure how the weekday travel will be since it's a work week and summer time?

We're looking for advise and route options from those who have traveled this route to make sure we don't get on one we will regret. Also some nice overnight spots if anyone has stayed along the way.

The total trip one way is under 1100 miles so we're looking at 3 days minimum to 4 days max and might just boondock around some of the major cities. If we feel the need we will find a overnight campground from on the road since they would all be just a single overnight.

So looking for route and overnight options from the group.

Safe Travels to All.

I would run 98/19 up to I10 west to 231 north to Montgomery, Al. Take I85 west to I65 north up to Indianapolis. Then take 465 North to exit 33 to Keystone parkway towards Carmel.(US31N) to US20E. Go east on US 20 to SR19 N. This will get you near Elkhart, you will need to where your campground is from here. It might be a few miles longer, but this is the way I would go. Montgomery is not bad, nor is Birmingham(as long as you are not in rush hour). Nashville can be touchy, but better than Atlanta. Louisville is not a problem(Again as long as not in rush hour). Same for Indianapolis. I have been through all these towns, with little problem. Like i said Nashville sometimes gets a little hectic, even in non rush hour times, but if you get through there between 10 and 2 you should be ok. This spring we stopped at Deer Run RV park, which is just north of Troy, Al off Rt 231, About 370 miles from Brooksville, Fl.It is approx. 425 miles from Troy to Cave city. We also have stayed at Cave Country RV Campgrounds Exit 53 I65 North of Bowling Green ky. It is approx. 355miles from Cave City to ElkhartYou can check out Woodall's .com for directions to these campgrounds, easy on and off. If you have any questions just ask, or PM me if you don't want the info on here.
