Jo,
We live in W.Cental FL and own a cabin & RV lot at Rock Ridge Resort, across the street from Pipestem. We have a 39ft MH and tow a Ford Ranger. We spend the summer up there and visit the state park almost daily. It is a wonderful park. I don't think you'll have any problem getting into a big spot this time of year. Just call and tell them you have a big rig and verify they have you slotted for a big site, and ask for one that is fairly level (hard to find anywhere in WV, the whole state is steep mountains) We have seen many big rigs in there, but they are frequently booked solid in the busy season which doesn't allow for flexibility. Even in the off season, they may be busy on the weekend, so I would advise you to not arrive on Fri or Sat, so they'll have more flexibility. This time of year should not be a problem, though.
If you are not used to back country mountain driving, be forewarned that the road (Athens Rd & Rt 20) getting there can be a white knuckle experience the first time. Just drive real slow. The locals are used to big RVs taking up the whole road and going 20mph!
It is a beautiful area. Take advantage of the indoor heated pool at the lodge, climb the tower, ride a horse on the trails, visit the local Pipestem Trading Post, go listen to the carillion bells at Athens Univ just down the road, take a drive to Sandstone Falls, the Sandstone Visitors Center, Grandview, Bluestone, and Hawk's Nest state parks (WV doesn't charge an entrance fee for most of their parks and they are gorgeous).
Email me privately (

If you were going in May, we might be able to show you around.
