Fort Clinch State Park, Florida

If there is anyone who camped at Fort Clinch, I was hoping to get a question answered. We are stopping for 1 night next winter. We would like to visit the Fort without unhooking the truck and were wondering how far the Fort is from the camping area. We'll have out bicycles with us or we can walk if the distance is reasonable.

Very short bike ride from river sites... from beach sites maybe a mile. Mostly flat and mostly shaded ride. Do not arrive after dark... the entry road trees have lots of scars to indicate it is a bad idea.

Great place. X2 on the warnings about the trail at night. You should try to spend an extra day if you can. Very quaint town with lots of great restaurants and shopping.

Just a warning, it seems campsites there are almost impossible to get.

I was at the front desk at ft Clinch last year and the phone rang. The ranger said there were no sites available. While I was still there someone drove up asking availability and she gave them 2 nights in a beachfront site. It tends to confirm that state parks in Fl hold back a few sites and also have cancellations. I know Anastasia has something like 10% of the sites that cannot be reserved. We went there a year or so ago and had 3 different sites for 4 nights. The ranger put us in a site for the entire stay in a site that doesn't show up on the reservation map.

I have not stayed at the beachfront sites at Ft Clinch, they are very nice looking, but I'm told to be prepared to be sandblasted if it's windy. The riverfront sites are very nice and there are some very big ones. If there is a downside, it's that you hear the constant droning of the industrial complex across the river. Not horrible, but it's there. But it's a great park with lots to do, plus the nearby town.

Florida state parks hold back "walk up" sites, first come first serve. There is a specific number like 20% but don't quote me on that. How it works is a mystery to me. I do not think they hold back any of the best sites like waterfront.

+1 on you need more than one night. The first time we stopped there we moved sites a couple of times to be able to stay longer. Across the river is St. Marys GA where there is a naval base. You may see a submarine going out. The Fort is interesting and has actors portraying soldiers and such. Fernandina Beach is beautiful with lots of shops and restaurants.

We have stayed at both the river and the beach CG and prefer the beach. The river sites are wooded and one we had was tight getting our 40' MH in. The satellite dome was also blocked.

What are the odds that one could do that for an entire winter, just bounce around the different state parks in Florida, without reservations?

Very slim, you could probably do it but be prepared to stay at Wally's place or regular RV parks quite often.

Thanks everyone. i booked a beach site for 2 nights. I wish it could be longer but I'm glad I was convinced to do more than just 1 night.

I met a guy at Rodman State Park that was doing exactly that. He'd used up his two weeks there and somehow got two weeks at Anastasia. I was amazed since I'd just been looking and couldn't find anything.
