We are leaving the RG valley next week and going to Arizona. We are thinking of stopping at Fort Davis, TX for a couple of days. Is the state park at Fort Davis a good one? Also, will the altitude make it uncomfortably cold? Thanks for your help.

There in January. State Park is very nice. All sites are nice, some have a overhead limb problem for higher rigs. Altitude no problem.

We liked Ft. Davis SP a lot. As trvl2smwhr says, some sites have low branches, but there are also many that don't. We were there twice. Once was in Feb. '07 and it was cool, but not that bad.

If you have time, check out the fort in town and drive or hike to the top of the hill in the state park. The views are great.

Ft. Davis is a great place to stay! It will be cold, but this isn't the Rockies so I wouldn't expect any winter weather!!

Also, if the weather is clear, don't forget to visit the McDonald Observatory. Darkest place in the continental US and a great star gazing experience. It is about 30-45 minutes from Ft. Davis SP.
