Free boondock off I-8 east of San Diego?

I'll be driving Phx to the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 26. Is there a handy Walmart, rest area, casino, etc off I-8 just east of San Diego where I can get a little rest before driving to the stadium the next morning? Thanks.

There are many internet resources to answer your question.

California CA Wal mart Store Locations Map

If you have a laptop, smart phone, or tablet there are apps that specifically help locate these places. Allstays has good apps for this.

Going to reply as much to subscribe as anything.

Pickin's are slim for boondocking once you get within about 50 miles of the coast.

There is the Golden Acorn casino (exit 61 at Old Hwy 80) and the Viejas Casino (between exit 36 and 33)...have seen RV's in the casino parking lots all the time, but I don't know what their policy is.

Golden Acorn has a "travel center" and that usually means Big Rigs can stay-over for their rest periods(?):

These reports say RV overnighters are welcome:

Best luck

I'm making the same trip at the same time for the same reason. We are staying on the coast and plan to drive straight thru.

That's cool. Is the performance at the parade, game or both?

I attended the H-Bowl in 2009 in a rented class C and stayed at the Chula Vista RV resort right on the bay, it was really nice.

Have a great trip in your new rig, abarkl. Tell your son to "break a leg". I'm a former marching trumpeter myself.

When I attended the 2009 Holiday Bowl, the Nebraska Band had to cancel their bowl trip because a huge blizzard prevented most of the band members from getting back to Lincoln to board the charter buses to transport them to San Diego. So the Nebraska officials in San Diego recruited one of the high school bands at the event. They gave all the musicians red Nebraska t-shirts and the music for the Nebraska fight songs. The high school band did a great job at the game and was much appreciated by the Husker faithful.

We stayed at Chula Vista RV four separate times this year and highly recommend it.

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like the Viejas Casino will be the place. Right off the interstate and they do allow overnights.

We will haul 2 quads and a motorcycle in the garage and tailgate with the motorhome at the bowl game. Then drive the next day to Glamis to ride the dunes for a few days. The rare Huskers/Dunes combo trip!

Check out freecamping.net they show all the BLM sites all over north america. Stayed at a couple sites in Arizona around Wickenburg, Lake Havasu and Zion Nat Park and were perfect! They give GPS coordinates that will take you right there. Boondocking at it's best!
