Dose anyone have any information about when and if Ft. Pickens campground in Pensacola is going to open back up?

I believe there are no plans to reopen the campground. The last information I have received, is that they are not going to rebuild the road to it. Terrible shame I think.

Jayco 1, According to Deputy Superintendent Nina A. Kelson the road repair will start in the Fall of 2008 and be completed by the Spring of 2009. The campground has been open to hikers and people that wanted to take a boat out to Ft. Pickens for quite a while and it should be open to all campers in the Spring of 2009. You can contact Deputy Kelson @ nina_kelson@nps.gov to get further updates. We are hoping that the road will be finished soon because Ft. Pickens is one of our favorite places to camp. Great news, I'll be looking forward to it. So much for knowing what's going on in your own back yard.

Jayco 1.. An update on Fort Pickens, construction on the road to the Fort begins on 1 Dec with completion in early April. The Campground, at least part -will open to vehicles at that time. Here's the article.
Fort Pickens future..

Hopefully we will have a better update as the project nears completion.

Glad to see the road is being rebuilt.
I worked there in the late 80s & stayed in the CG for about a month while I work there as a Seasonal NPS Ranger.

Does anyone know is the fort itself open? I heard it had a lot of damage from the Hurricanes.

Several of the old wood buildings were washed off of their foundations and many of the exhibits were destroyed.
The Masonry fort survived well enough. Depending on when you were last there you may be disapointed with the fort as many parts have been closed off and fenced off.
There was a lot of flooding and sand washed into the area.
Loop A is open for tent camping only and to get there you have to either walk or take a boat. There is water and bathroom available at the campground.
I would recommend you visit NAS Pensacola to see Fort Barrancus.

Historic Fort Barrancas, constructed between 1839-1844, was one of four forts built to protect the Pensacola Navy Yard.

The Fort Barrancas Area is on Taylor Road approximately a half mile east from the Museum of Naval Aviation. The area includes the historic Water Battery, Fort Barrancas, trails, visitor center, picnic areas, and the Advanced Redoubt.

Fort Barrancas sits on a bluff overlooking the entrance to Pensacola Bay. The natural advantages of this location have inspired engineers of three nations to build forts. The British built the Royal Navy Redoubt here in 1763 of earth and logs. The Spanish built two forts here around 1797. Bateria de San Antonio was a masonry water battery at the foot of the bluff. Above it was earth and log Fort San Carlos de Barrancas. American engineers remodeled the Water Battery in 1840 and built a masonry fort on the bluff between 1839 and 1844, connected by a tunnel to the Water Battery. Scheduled tours of Fort Barrancas are daily at 2:00 p.m. and at the Advanced Redoubt every Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

The visitor center is open March-October at 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and November-February at 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Please call 850-455-5167 for more information.
