Gaffney SC to Hatteras NC

Any suggestions/recommendations on campgrounds or travel routes traveling from Gaffney SC to Hatteras NC? We are having our RV serviced at the Gaffney Freightliner Service Center and then heading to Hatteras but are not in a hurry.

If you are planning to go to Hatteras by road to the OuterBanks then south...rather than the Ferry...suggest the Refuge on Roanoke Island as a nice, accommodating place.
http://www.therefuge-roanokeisland.com/HOME.htm
The alternate route by ferry is to go to cedar island...then ferry to ocracoke island then ferry to Hatteras...then you could go back the same way or go north on the highway to the Kitty Hawk/Nags Head section of the Outerbanks. A left on Rt. 64 and about 2 hours driving will put you on Rt. 95...or you can just continue north on the Banks to the Norfolk area.

As noted, if you don't want to do the two ferry crossings, your best route is back up 85 to Greensboro, then 40 East to Raleigh/Durham, 540 to Rt. 64. 64 will take you directly into Roanoke Island and Manteo.

Say hello to Pat at the FCSC for us. The one thing we miss in now having a coach not on a FL chassis is our annual trip to Gaffney for service. Pat and staff there are tops.

We just got back from a stay at Ocean Waves, in Waves NC (on Hatteras island). It's right on the beach and considerably less expensive than the KOA right next to it. It's a bit south of Roanoke. Clean and adequate as a home base, although the sites are a bit close.

Thanks, we have a place to stay in Rodanthe but would prefer not to make the 8 hour drive in one day so are looking at any recommendations for camping between the two destinations.

If you go south around Raleigh, rather than around to the north, and head to Selma NC, right on I95 you'll find RVacation. We stayed there on our way back from the Outer Banks last week. A great overnight stop, big roomy sites and right off the freeway. My mapping program calculates a total additional distance of 13 miles should you route through Selma vs the more "direct" route.

Thanks for the Selma suggestion. It looks like a good half way stop and a nice RV Park.

Heading to Outter Banks next year. Where did you end up staying?

All of the work was completed at Gaffney and we got an early start so drove all the way but the suggestion of the campground at Selma would have been our choice. Once we got near Rocky Mount there were not many options but you need to decide before getting to Raleigh.
