Gatlinburg camping ?

As anyone with children (ours are 9, 6 & 5), camped in the Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg area. Where did you go/where do you recommend?

Hi Benji343,
With the family mentioned in the OP, consider River Plantation. Go to Pigeon Forge Campground | River Plantation RV Park, Pigeon Forge RV Campground, Smoky Mountain RV Park, Sevierville RV Camping and get the details. For families, it is the CG nearest the shows and kid entertainment.

I like Gatlinburg proper much better than pidgeon forge. It's much more walkable.

Thanks everyone for the insight! Langolf, we'll be looking forward to how your trip went. I've seen these CG's mentioned and they all look great, so the decision will be tough but doesn't seem that we can go too wrong.

We had a great time in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. We stayed at Riveredge RV park. There are three rv parks that seem almost connected...Foothills, Riveredge and Twin Mountain. We selected Riveredge due to trolley stop (did not use), nice facilities and the ability to walk to a couple of restaurants. The reason why we did not use the trolley is that we rented a van from Enterprise. They will pick up up right at your site if you are not towing.

Used Riveredge as a base camp. Went to Dollywood, Zip lining at Climb Works (can take kids down to 5), horseback riding at Smokey Mountain stables, tourist stuff in Gatlinburg and time in the park (Cade's Cove, etc...). We did take the RV up to Clingman's Dome...fun drive for a 36' class A. You could walk to Dixie Stampede however we drove.

Back to the rv resort. The sites are tight however was not a problem. Water pressure was ok along with cable tv. The laundry room was very good and the bathhouse was very nice (only looked since we used the rv). The kids really enjoyed the pool. Just past the north entrance to the park you can access the river.

Hope that this helps.

Twin Creeks RV Resort in Gatlinburg is our favorite. Paved sites, wifi, cable (analog and digitial) and the cleanest restrooms and showers that we have ever used. Trash pickup at your site and a trolley stop at the top of the hill. Kiddie pool, regular pool, and hot tub for adults.

I'm amazed - not one person recommended staying in the Smoky Mountain National Park itself. I guess most RV "campers" noways insist on Wi-Fi, cable TV, full hookups, heated swimming pools, and commercial "attractions".

Of course, the roads in the park are narrow and twisty, and many of the camping spots aren't sized for big rigs. (The Cades Cove campground says it can only handle RVs up to 35 feet.)

For the real deal family camping experience go to one of the following:
1. Cade's Cove
2. Elkmont
3. Smokemont
4. Cosby

I spend many wonderful family vacations in these as a kid. First in an Army surplus field tent and then in a pop up camper. As a retired full timer, I no longer "camp" but I do know the meaning of the word and appreciate the experience.

Glad I found this. We will be traveling there in June. I have scoured the internet and yet to make a decision on a campground.

Here is a good site that lists most of the campgrounds in the area:

Smoky Mountains RV Campgrounds: 30 campgrounds located in and around Gatlinburg

Pine Mountian is our favorite if you want to be near DollyWood and Splash Country. It has a trolley stop also. It is associated with the hotel across the street so you are allowed to use it's lazy river pool. It is far enough off the main road that you don't feel like you are in the middle of town.
