We will be spending time in Oregon and Washington State this summer.
Would like input about campings and places not to miss.
We like staying in National Parks and other natural places.
Thanks for your input.

Wow! Nice trip. We did these states several years ago. Definitely take your time and travel the Cascade Loop in WA. Go to Applets and Cottlets - they make natural fruit candy.

Go to the Olympic Peninsula and visit the Hoh Rain Forest.

Seattle is a must! Make sure to visit Pike Fish Market in downtown Seattle. Duck! The Boeing factory is also in Seattle and has tours. And..of course... the Space Needle.

Head south toward Oregon from Seattle and stop at Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens. There is a good IMAX theater near Mt. St. Helens.

In OR, be sure to visit Fort Clatsop where Lewis and Clark spent a winter. This is also near the western terminus of U.S. Rt. 30 that runs from coast to coast. We drove a good distance on old Rt. 30 heading east on our way home. Mt. Hood is also in Oregon. Also, be sure to hit sections and stops along the Oregon Trail whenever possible.

Enjoy!

Crater Lake NP is a nice place to visit--we had 5 inches of snow on top, on Sept. 10/05--It was beautiful.
The Rogue River Jet boat ride is fun--it is a great river,
We did an 11,000 mile trip last year--Yellowstone, Tetons, Glacier, Wash. OR, down to San Diego, NV, AR, CO, across to PA & back down to FL. 5 Months, had a great time.

Thanks for your reply.
I should have mentioned how we plan to drive. From Florida to Michigan(grandkids) to Iowa(Winnebago factory) to Reno (friends)and over to San Francisco.North from there. Back via Michigan again. we plan on about 3 months.
I have been checking the maps today and noticed several places we might want to see while in that area. Is it worth a side trip to see the Grand Coulee dam? (we have been to the Hoover dam)
If given a choice: Glacier Park or Yellowstone???(or both?????)(we were in Yellowstone in 1984 and drove to Alaska and saw many glaciers)
Besides Clatsop are there other important Lewis and Clark places to visit?

OK. You asked for it!

Michigan - Frankenmuth - German town. Bronner's Christmas Store. Visit the Upper Penninula. Make sure you stop and try a Pastie somewhere - we did not and still regret it.

Iowa - Go to the Amana Colonies. Very interesting!

South Dakota - the town of De Smet and the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead. - make sure you visit the Badlands NP and Wall Drug - Rapid City area - Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse. Go to Circle B Ranch - it is a great chuck-wagon ranch with great food and entertainment (old time cowboy western music). Also make sure you get to Custer State Park. Lot's of wildlife, Bison, and a herd of wild burros (said to be descended from old prospector's burros). The burros are really cool - sometimes they'll block the road and won't let you pass until you feed them.

Head to Grand Tetons NP. There is a good campground with awesome views just east of the park. This park is south of Yellowstone, which is only a short drive away. After visiting the Tetons, head to Yellowstone. It is amazing how it is recovering from the forest fires. We stayed at the West Yellowstone KOA.

North Dakota - Make sure you get to Theodore Roosevelt NP - This is one of the best NP parks in the system and one of the least visited. Go into the town of Medora and walk around. Go to the Medora Musical - a great, outdoor show set in the side of a hill.

If you can get to Billings, MT visit the Billings KOA - the very first KOA campground. On the way, stop at Pompeys Pillar along the Lewis & Clark Trail. You will see where members of the party signed their names on the rocks.

Idaho - Visit Coeur d'Alene - stay at the KOA - beautiful lake area.

WA - The Grand Coulee Dam is worth the stop. As you head into the Cascade Loop check out the town of Winthrop - old western town. We stayed at the KOA there. Also along the Cascade Loop there is Applets & Cotlets Candy Kitchen - very interesting. Also nearby - visit Leavenworth - a town fashioned in the Bavarian Alps style.

If you get to MN - visit Walnut Grove and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. Also, Fort Pipestone National Monument is in MN.

If you get to Nebraska make sure you get to Chimney Rock National Historic Site and Scotts Bluff along the Oregon Trail - nearby in Bayard, NE is another chuckwagon style restaurant where you can go for a wagon ride along the trail - there is a campground there also. Wagon Train Treks and Chuck Wagon Cookouts.

I'll add more as I think of it.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. It will make the trip even more interesting. We have been to Yellowstone over 20 years ago, this time will be very different.
Input from this forum makes it even more special.
Thanks again.

Everybody's pretty well told of the high spots, except one. Don't know if you'll be traveling on I-80 and going through Nebraska, but if you're anywhere near Kearney, then you have to visit the North Platte River Museum. At first, you'll think it's a bridge over the Interstate, but it's actually a two-level museum about the western migration. My DW was driving down the highway when she saw it and she knew my interest in Western history (I was sleeping) and she pulled off. It's fantastic and you can get some buffalo stew when you're done in their cafeteria.

Yes we will be driving I 80 straight out from Michigan. The Museum sounds great. It will be on our list. Thanks for your input!
