Going to Davis Mountains State Park

In two weeks my family and I are going to Davis Mountains State Park ( for spring break). I haven't been over in that part of the state in for over 30 some odd years now! Last time I was their was for The Texas Star Party over at the Prude Ranch in Ft. Davis, Tx. We are so looking forward to this trip epically me cause I will get to drive my Ram 2500 and see how it really handles for that long of a distance and to also see what kind of mileage I'll get ever since I unplugged my EGR.

Are you going to the state or National park? As you know there are two out there and the state park is set up for hauling a camper through it....it's VERY rugged.

Have fun and pack for all temperatures. This time of year if you stay at the Rio Grande campground it might be 35-40 at night and 90 during the day.

I wish we were, too. We've been camping at Davis Mountains State Park for over 40 years and still look forward to every trip.

I don't think I was thinking when I posted my last post. I would delete it but don't know how. Hey RustyJC, since you have been going their for so long. What do you recommend on doing there? I know for one thing I'm bringing my telescope!! I'm going to call them today to find out more about the fire ban.

Well, the Scenic Loop, of course - we always pack a picnic lunch and stop at the scenic roadside park between McDonald observatory and the TX118/TX166 intersection. We'll stop again at the roadside park known as the Rockpile on the back side of the loop on TX166. When you see it, you'll know why. Keep your eyes peeled and you may see some pronghorn out on the flats to the west of TX166. Touring McDonald observatory, if you haven't in awhile; they've added some new telescopes. The Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center between Ft. Davis and Alpine. Skyline Drive right there in the state park, especially around sunset. Kicking around Marfa now that it's become a Mecca for the artsy-fartsy crowd (lots of bookstores, art galleries, sculpture exhibits, etc.) - stay until dark and try to see the Marfa Lights (beer helps!). A day trip from Ft. Davis to Alpine to Study Butte to Presidio (that Study Butte to Presidio stretch is the famous River Road) to Marfa and back to Ft. Davis. At least one meal at the Cueva de Leon Mexican restaurant, and breakfast at the Fort Davis drug store (if it's reopened - the previous owners always served up an excellent breakfast spread). Sit in your campsite and watch the mule deer and javelina wander through. The mule deer are so tame that they will eat deer corn or even potato chips right out of your hand - not that I would ever feed them since that's against the rules, of course (say hello to Bucky the mule deer for us). The Davis Mountains are great for birding, if you're into that. And naps.....lots of naps (you can blame it on the altitude. )

Have a great time!!

Rusty

If you do this loop, stop for an early lunch at Kathy's Kosmic Kowgirl Kafe in Terlingua.

No, I'm not kidding!

ditto to all above! just got back a few weeks ago..3 nights at Chisos in Big Bend and 3 nights in Davis Mt. SP. I still count Davis Mt. SP as one of the best parks I ever stay at. Have been going for about 15 years now.

It was in response to the original destination you posted in the thread title which was corrected for you.

The response your referring to now will be deleted also. I'm letting you know here so you don't feel like I do sometimes which is "I must be losing my mind".
