That was how I found out I was eligible for a Golden Access pass many years ago. Went to a US park and the gate people told me and got the paperwork filled out. Been carrying it ever since. Even used it in Hawaii.

One campgroud that refused the pass was the Double Lake campground in the Sam Houston National Forest in TX, (in Feb of 2009).
An employee of the concessionaire operating that campground insisted that they did not honor the Golden Age Passport... and that I had to pay the full price for a campsite.
We only stayed one night, (not the week we had planned), and moved to Cagle campground, (in the same Nat Forest), for the remainder of the week...where the pass was honored.

I've often wondered if a concessionaire can legally refuse the Golden Age Passport, since most do.
If they can't, and if I had some written proof, I would raise a "big stink" if/when it happens again.

I'm not as shy as I used to be.... and as the old the saying goes: "The squeaky wheel gets the oil discount".

Good thread....

We may be going to Mammoth Caves NP. next June. My son is on permanent disabilities (SSI) Getting a (disabilities) Access Pass for him, would that transfer to saving us the 50% on camping fees for that park. He already has a state of Ohio one where we get either 10% or 50% off overnight camping in the state of Ohio at their state parks.

We plan on doing more traveling starting in the summer of 2016 (Retiring) and will need some sort of pass.

Yes, you can get the disabilities access pass which will save 50% camp fees.

He may not get the discount in the state parks of many other states with the federal (disabilities) Access Pass but he will in federal parks in any state.
If Ohio honors the federal pass by giving the discount in their state parks I know that he will also get it in Louisiana State parks and perhaps some other states's parks, (but not all).
Each state has it's own rules about the "federal disability"pass, and the "federal old age pass".
BTW, he may qualify for the designated "handicap campsites" in all parks with such sites...I do with my Wisconsin handicap "mirror tag"

We have a national park near us here in NE. Ohio (Cuyahoga Valley NP.) which I will check into for him. I printed off the form to see what paperwork I need.

Were just dealing with health insurance for him now. Plan to retire in a year or so and my Union wants to drop him from their insurance. If he was normal he would have been covered till age 26.

I thought that was one of the reasons we just went through this mess called Obama Care.

We workcamped at Tipsaw National Forest campground in southern Indiana, (run by the private company, Cradle of Forestry), and we definitely honored the Golden Age Passes. I also wonder who doesn't.
