Absolutely love camping in that area - spent many weekends camping at a little family run campground called Howells Camping. The campground is set back a bit, but the sites are comfortable and there are many regulars that are so friendly. (As with all campers )

I'll second that campground. We only stayed there one night on our way north from Virginia, but that was a beautiful area. Bonus if you are a fly fisherman, since Orvis has their HQ there. There are also some very nice spots right on the river if you can get one.

I would strongly suggest that you plan a day at the Shelburne Musem on rt7 just south of Burlington. With the interest you mentioned you will enjoy your visit here, you may not need a full day but the grounds are large with much to see.

Good base camp in Vermont

If you like horses, visit the UVM Morgan Horse Farm near Middlebury.

Thanks for all of the advice. We were supposed to be there now! Unfortunately the first week of September my wife became ill with a 10 day stay in the hospital. I cancelled the reservations that I had made. We will put this trip off until sometime in 2020.

Very sorry you had to postpone your trip - more sorry your wife is not feeling well. Vermont will always be there, get healthy and enjoy it in 2020. Although not great - it would've been so much worse if she got sick while you were traveling and you didn't have your doctor's to go to (FYI - not that I'm wishing you ill *) but Dartmouth Hospital is nearby Vermont and a great hospital!)

We just spent a week there last month and it was the best campground we have ever visited. All grass sites, lots of space, beautiful mornings and amazing sunsets. We booked again for the same time next year.
