Days in August at the South Rim will be warm; nights pleasant.

If you can be flexible, Sept and October are very pleasant months.

South side is touristy, crowded, hot, park CG seems always full when school is out. North side is cooler, much less crowded, lots of walking trails along the rim, park CG is dry camping, private FHU CG at Jacob's Lake is over 40 miles away.
Make reservations now if you have a limited time frame.

We absolutely love the North Rim for its quietness and cooler temperatures. However, we also like the South Rim for better and more viewing areas of the canyon. For a first time visitor I'd highly recommend going to the South Rim even though it's more crowded. Also, August will have slight less families because of school starting rather than July. In Arizona school even begins the first week of August.

We will be visiting the south rim of the canyon, we're planning on getting there around the 20th of August. Maybe the temps will be starting to recede some by then, and hoping school will be back in and maybe less crowded. Thanks to everyone for the info,it really helps since we have never been west beyond Oklahoma.

One thing I would definitely advise to do, if you're able, is to walk down the Bright Angel Trail if only for a 1/4 miles or so. You will get an altogether perspective of the canyon.

Also, for walking the fairly flat Rim Trail, you can use the free shuttle and get off and on wherever. It's a convenient way to get around the park.

Drive to the east entrance of the park, too. Lots to see at that area.

For lots of good information poke around on the park's official site. Each national park has a site like this and gives you campground information, road repair info, things to do, etc.

I'd also recommend you stay IN the park for the best experience. Trailer Village is the place if you want hookups. The free shuttle stops right outside the RV park entrance or you can even take a stroll to the Rim for a quiet early morning or evening view.

Her's a weather chart for historical average temperatures at the South Rim:

It will be warm to toasty. Have a fun trip!
