Grants Pass Air Quality

DW and I are heading towards Grants Pass for 3 days and then to Crater Lake. We've heard there are fires in the area. Can anybody tell us if the air quality is bad from the smoke?

There are several forest fires in Josephine County but the air today is not bad. A couple of days ago air quality was listed as very unhealthy for Grants Pass, Medford and lower valley areas. Recent winds have cleared it up significantly but that can change. I've added the channel 12 Medford and ODT camera sites. If you look at the ODOT cameras you can see the smoke & haze in the background. According to the local new even though high in elevation Crater Lake also had quite a bit of smoke.

Just a follow up - I don't know when you are traveling but the weather forecasters expect smoke for several more weeks. They don't expect it to clear up until after we get some rain. Six large fires with in 60 miles of Grants Pass - some almost contained and some at zero containment. The air quality is not very good - makes your throat dry and irritates your eye.

Thank God for smoke free fresh air!!! An inversion lifted and it's the clearest it's been since the fires started.

Yes, we had wind and thunderstorms last night and that has cleared the air but the fires are still very active and (my guess is) the smoke will return in a day or so.

We have been hiding out on the coast hoping for the best. Had to return yesterday for various reasons. The air was bad yesterday but much improved today. We are going to need a significant rain event to resolve the situation. If the bad air returns we may be headed back to the coast.

UPDATE:

There were some significant rains the other night. At least at the south end of the Rogue Valley the air is much improved. If I look across the valley I can see smoke in the air, but it no longer smells of smoke and the air seems breathable.

I know this is a tad late but, we were at Seven Feathers
RV july 28-Aug 4, no smoke there but lots everywhere else. We drove to Crater Lake July 30 and couldnt see the Lake fronm the viewpoints. Very sad considering the drive to get there. We asked forrestry on Hiway 62 (?) and wer e not told about the smoke at the top.

The smoke has become highly unpredictable. It is here and now it's gone, now it's back. Sorry you didn't get to see the lake. Worth another visit for sure. Big weather event Thursday as they are calling for heavy rain. Unfortunately it also is expected to bring more lighting.

We saw the beauty last year and I would reccomend it as a must see to anyone. We took our neighbours this time for their 1st see and were dissapointed. They'll be back through again though.
