Great Sand Dunes Nat. Park co.
In a few days I will be traveling across highway 160 near the Great Sand Dunes National Park and was thinking of stoping in for a few hours and looking around. My question is does anyone know if the parking lot at visitor center big enough to park a 42'mh with 20' toad. I know they have smaller restrictions on camp sites.

Thanks for the reply, with the parking lot big enough we will most likely just look around some then move on. Just learned about the Great Dunes and hadn't planed on going there, but learning to be retired means learning to be flexible.
Thanks again!

There will be room at the visitor center IF you go during non-peak hours. When you pull off of Rt. 150, stay left for the parking loop.
If you want to get out on the dunes, you have to go a little further on Rt. 150 and make the left after the visitor center. At the end of the road there is a parking lot with RV spots on the right. However, we found a lot of cars parked in those spots. Also our 40 footer with a jeep toad was too long and we had to park diagonally.
Google maps has some great shots of both areas so you can see what you have to navigate.

Really a great stop, if we had had more time we would have worn ourselfs out. Parking lot cramped but we wiggled in with no problems. Now to clean all this sand out of the MH!

I took hwy 160 East out of Alamosa,Co to hwy 150North to park. There is restrictions on camper size (pretty small only) and no vehicles on sand dunes. Just walking, hiking, crawling then cussing the sand that get everywhere. But a pretty neat place, and neat story on how it was believed to have formed.

If I remember correctly, the dunes were created by sand and dirt blowing over the Sangre De Christo range and dropping into the basin. It is fun to see sand that has been hit by lightening but makes you understand it when they say, if a storm comes up, get off the dunes.

2008 was a good year for the 40x floor plan! We love ours, this is our first extended trip in it, all previous we're short 1 to 3 weeks.
