Grrrr, Milwaukee!

I'm hoping to purchase and take possession of a Class A motorhome very soon. I'm a travel nurse, and currently contracted in Milwaukee until the end of May. I thought to get the rig and a campground spot, move into it, clear out of my corporate apartment and use my housing stipend to pay for CG and MH in May.

Milwaukee has precious few campgrounds with electric and water hookups (much less full hookups) within driving distance of the city proper, where I work. The Wisconsin State Fairgrounds is the closest, seems decent, although it's basically a parking lot with full hookups. I could make it work, though. That is, I thought I could, then I saw that the 2015 monthly rate is $800 plus tax! For Milwaukee. In May.

I'm planning to work in Seattle in the fall, and the much nicer campgrounds there are quoting less than that when I call about reservations.

Not sure quite what to do, although it's not a crisis situation. Open to suggestions, and thanks for letting me vent.

A search for "milwaukee area campgrounds" shows 6 campgrounds, (and
Milwaukee, Wisconsin Campgrounds, RV Parks, Camping Info | Good Sam Camping shows a few more).

However, depending on your definsion of "within driving distance of the city proper" they may or my not be of use to you.

BTW, Wisconsin, (and Milwaukee in particular), is defiantly NOT the "RVing capital of the world".

Good luck

There is a Jellystone (Yogi Bear) in Caledonia, WI... Its just a couple miles south of me in Oak Creek, WI (south of the airport).. I believe they have seasonal sites, or maybe monthly rates.. Plus, you'll probably get a deal since its before Memorial Day..

Camping and Cabins in Wisconsin | Jellystone Parkā„¢ in Caledonia, WI

Hope that helps... Its a very nice place and it would be somewhat convenient to downtown..

Thank you for the input!

I had checked out the Jellystone site, but as I sleep during the day and am up at night (night shift nurse) I had ruled it out because it's so kid-oriented, and also pretty darn expensive. I expect kids at a campground, that's fine, but figured that deliberately staying somewhere like that would be borrowing trouble.

I drove by the Wisconsin Fairgrounds RV Park this morning after work. It's pretty bleak looking, but I spoke to a man walking his dog there and he said that the wifi is good and they feel safe. He agreed that there's not much to choose from in the Milwaukee area for a bigger rig. There were some nice coaches and fifth wheels there, including an absolutely gorgeous vintage Wanderlodge. It's very close to my hospital, less than 20 minutes.

Tomorrow after work I'm going to head down to Caledonia and check out Cliffside County Park. They don't have weekly or monthly rates, only daily, but no time limit on stays, and it looks like it might be lovely. I'm resigning myself to paying more than I wanted to be in the area, but it's only for a month, so that's okay. I may check out Jellystone while I'm there, just because.

On the upside, I just made reservations through the fall/winter in the Seattle area at a park that came highly recommended by friends. Very excited!

Drove through Cliffside County Park this morning and saw their RV setup--it's beautiful out there! Only about a half hour to work. No wifi, but great washrooms, spacious back-in sites with 50 amp and water, and a dump station on premises. Lots of trees and wildlife, and each site has a fire ring. I have to work out the exact dates, but I'll definitely be booking there for next month!

One note: There are no cliffs anywhere near this park, and it's in Racine County, so I'm not sure where the name came from.
