Harvest Hosts

The Harvest Host program seems intriguing but they certainly don't give out any information about it until you pay the $79 to join.

Are there current members to it that could tell us some particulars about the program?

Thank you!

1) Is it by reservation? We don't want to drive several hours just to find out the particular farm we were headed to is full.

2) What is check-in time?

3) What is check-out time?

4) What items are we allowed to have outside besides chairs?

5) Can we cook a meal outside on our bbq?

6) Are leashed dogs allowed on the grounds? Or will there be an area set aside for a "doggie walk"

7) Is there be a breed restriction of dogs?

8) Anything else you can think of to tell us?

Member here.
You call the day before, See if they have room.
Arrive during normal business hours.
Dog rules varry by place.
I wouldn't bbq unless they say ok.
These are places of business.
Breweries, winery,museums, farms, golf courses.
I wouldn't bbq in a museum parking lot.
You are EXPECTED to patronage the place you are staying.
Do a tasting, buy something from shop, go to the museum.
NONE of them are campgrounds.....
Beautiful to have a glass of wine watching the sun go down over the vineyard. ...

Scrapperjohn covered most of it.

These are locations that likely have parking for one or just a couple of larger vehicles. It is boondocking. There aren't typically "sites", but rather "space".

Most are miles off the highway/Interstate. They do not allow drop-ins; you must call ahead. Each location has their own rules. Always ask ahead of time (when you call to check availability and confirm permitted arrival/departure times) if you can have a pet. Many, especially those with their own dogs, do not permit outside animals.

For them, the Harvest Host program is a means to bring in retail customers, so they are expecting participation in the program means HH people will spend money at their place of business.

1) Is it by reservation? We don't want to drive several hours just to find out the particular farm we were headed to is full.

Some ask you to make a reservation, some ask that you call as you are enroute, some just let you show up. The info on each site is on the HH website.

2) What is check-in time?

Varies by location. Info on the HH website

3) What is check-out time?

Varies, but most expect you to clear our in the morning.

4) What items are we allowed to have outside besides chairs?

Allowed is the wrong term -- good form dictates not "setting up camp."

5) Can we cook a meal outside on our bbq?

I have cooked on our portable, but only at a HH location that was closed at the time. Most of them frown on it.

6) Are leashed dogs allowed on the grounds? Or will there be an area set aside for a "doggie walk"

Varies by location. Info on HH website.

7) Is there be a breed restriction of dogs?

Not that I am aware of, but some allow dogs, some do not.

8) Anything else you can think of to tell us?
We use HH a lot. Most of the locations are way off the beaten path. And some are hard to get into/out of, but except for a couple of locations, we have really enjoyed staying at HH instead of at a Walmart of Flying J. We were members of the RV Golf Club before HH bought it. We really like the golf club places - they have really good restaurants and most have really big parking lots.

Hope this is helpful.

Chuck

Thanks for the replies!

I had emailed HH and did indeed receive a response. They gave me answers to each of my questions, and along with EACH answer they let me know it's also answered in their FAQ section. *LOL I swear I did look there before I emailed them!

It looks like it could be fun to try it out for a year.

So if anyone is looking for more information about HH, be sure to visit their FAQ section.

We joined last December and are locked in for that rate for renewal. We purchased our trailer last November. Our first trip was last April and we used 4 HH.

Each is very different and we always paid attention to the requests of the hosts on their listing. One was about 5 miles off of the main highway and had electric and water. One let us put water in our tank from his own water supply.
One was a little farm during the slow time of year so there was not much for us to choose from to "thank" them. It was at a busy intersection though and had lots of traffic noise.

We will most likely renew and they are always adding new locations. It sure beats staying at a rest stop!

We've had a few great experiences with Harvest Hosts. Will be renewing, as it gives us another set of options when needed.

I have friends traveling and they used it 4 times. Loved it! I知 thinking about buying a membership. Seems like a good price. Hoping hosts are only a few miles off hiway a as we travel. I値l let you know my friends reviews once I hear more detail.

We have used HH locations many times all over the U.S, and Canada. We love, love, love it. Most times we do frequent the host but sometimes we just visit. It has never been a problem. Sometimes they are out of the way and sometimes not, depending on which direction we are heading. They have been some of the friendliest people we have met. Most have had plenty of room and were easy to get to and in and out of. Usually a large grass lot or paved parking. A few have even had hookups. Most do not. The cost of membership is paid after a couple of stays. Everything we have bought from hosts, we would have bought somewhere else anyway so no big deal and not really an extra expense. The Alpaca farm was fun and we were not required to buy one. Chuck

If you're interested in a specific area before you join, HH won't give that level of detail to non-members. But since they use Google Maps, you can switch it to satellite view and then zoom in. That will show you the names and then you can go look at their website to see what it offers.

UPDATE:
BTW, a Host can cancel on you after you have already made your route and other details. We had made the reservations a few weeks in advance. This was very upsetting and we could have become lifelong customers too. (Wine Club) So, we are having second thoughts about the membership and the integrity thereof.

I don't feel uncomfortable planning a Harvest Hoast stop weeks in advance... It's not supposed to be a planned stop months in advance...... Call the day before. See if they have room. Have called same day & only 1 said they were full.
That one only has room for 2 or 3 rigs.

In August we reserved a spot for January without a problem. We will call a week out to re-confirm. We are very pleased with HH and just renewed. We also fined that we spend more than we would have at a campground but have a couple bottles of wine to show for it.
