I think you did the right thing. Elk Meadow may not be the best park,
but it's sure close in to the Park. The CGs east on 34 along the Big Thompson River, although a beautiful drive, can get quite congested...especially coming through Estes Park.
The view at ELk Meadow ain't bad either, at times elk will wonder through the CG...also watch out for the holes the prairie dogs(I'm guessing)dig in and around the campsites.
There's a one way dirt road(11 - 13 mi. in length) that goes up to the Alpine Visitor's Center(almost 12K ft. in elev.) that's a 'must do' early in the morning toad drive. We saw a lot of deer and elk on that one...'Old Fall River Road', IIRC. Although dirt, it was quite passable by any passenger car at the time...can check at the park office for current road conditions...it really is a beautiful drive.
