Help with Veterans' Campgrounds
Does anyone have a list of Veterans' Campgrounds. I have found some on the web, but thought there would be Veterans who would have recommendations. I'm asking for a friend who served in Vietnam and wasn't aware that there were such campgrounds. He is disabled so his wife drives the RV. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
This was her response to the url I sent:
U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks
"Thanks for finding these. I've looked at them to see what type of ID you need to access, and we are not eligible to use these parks. Regular guys that have served & been honorably discharged are not eligible. You must be active, reservist, retired(career) or 100% disabled or DoD. It was a good thought, tho."

I'm concerned that if he is disabled and unable to drive, why isn't he 100% disabled? If he is 60% or more, he is unemployable and is entitled to 100% disability pay, and maybe an ID Card that will get them into the RV parks for military.
Good luck.

and if you have your golden age pass (disabled of at least 50%) you can stay at all Corps of Engineer parks for 1/2 the rate, provided you book online at recreation.gov
andddddd
most state parks give discounts if you present the golden age pass
you can pick up a pass at any NATIONAL park, just show em a paper stating your broken and they will issue the card on the spot.

Thanks, Wayne. Part of his disability occurred while he was in the service-I don't know the percentage, and the rest of his disability came about after he was discharged. He's such nice guy, never complains--I was hoping to find a way to help them enjoy their RV and save some money. On top of everything they have endured, their son served in Iraq so I'm sure the mental sacrifice they suffered was tremendous.

he would be pleasantly surprised at just how many veterans use the corps parks
staying on base is getting to costly, for us retirees and broken ones
plus we like to leave base cg for active duty that need the space more than us in high use areas

That's so good to know. And, they would be the first to want active military to have first dibs. Thanks so much.

Have you done a search on Google for Veteran's RV Parks?
Being from GA I'm sure you know about the Georgia Veteran's State Park in Cordele. Georgia State Parks - Georgia Veterans State Park

Hobo,
I'm still concerned that he is not getting his due process. If he served in Vietnam there are presumptive conditions that he may be entitled to. If any of his disabilities he contracted after release from service can be identified as pertaining to those presumptive conditions, he is eligible for further compensation. He/you can do a search on 'agent orange presumptive conditions' and get a list. I'm assuming a lot in that he did serve in VN. If not, he is still entitled to any follow-up disability that may have been caused by his prior service. Let's say he fell down and hurt his hip, knee, elbow, etc., while on active duty. If there are medical records that he was treated for that type of injury and today he is having follow-up indications of recurring pain from that injury, he may be entitled to a small percentage of the whole which will be added by formula to his existing disability compensation.
The very best thing he can do is talk to a Veterans advocate, like the DAV, or others and let them help him. The worse he can get for asking is a "no."
Good luck.

As a veteran, he is eligible to be a member of the Special Military Retired Active Travel (SMART) association. Tell him to take a look at SMART Blank SMART has chapters throughout the US.

Forwarded the site to them. I know it would be great if he could meet other veterans in a camping situation. He's one of the nicest men I've ever known, and his wife is a very good friend of mine. We get together with groups of women, which I'm sure bores the tears out of him, so what a nice change it would be to get together with other vets and their wives. Thank you all for the information you've given me.

Alll military parks are open to the military, IF, IF, IF you contact the person in charge and see if they have an opening. It is up to them to allow you the use. Some dont, but many fam camps allow former military the use, dependent on the situation. The worse they can say is no.
