Holbrook or Winslow AZ to Phoenix?

We have always traveled from Arkansas to Phoenix going across I40 to Flagstaff and down I17... Looking for a alternative... Has anybody traveled down hwy 87 from Winslow or maybe 377 from Holbrook To Payson? This in a class A so really wouldn't want any 20% grades or such... Not in a big hurry,, just looking for different scenery... Any special 'tourist traps' down that way ??? Thanks... Monkey

377 is fairly flat easy drive. Highway 260 is very scenic mostly wooded, 2 lane with frequent passing lanes. Fairly flat until 25 miles SE of Heber. Then a 3-6% mostly downhill grade most of the way to Payson. Again very scenic, wooded. After Payson 87 is 4 lane divided. It quickly drops into the desert with long 3-5% grades. All good well traveled highways.

Holbrook to Payson is very scenic as is Payson down to the desert, but there are some grades and curves. I don't stress over the route but if you are custom to driving AR roads I don't see you having any issues on this route. Good luck and enjoy the trip, there is a great diner in Payson on the left on your way, I don't recall the name. It is after the left turn you make in Payson at the light to follow 87.

Hi folks, I would like to refresh this thread for a minute. I'm pretty new here and to RVing. Going to Phoenix in a few days and want to go Via I-40 to Holbrook or Winslow. Does anyone have a favorite of the two? Can anyone tell me about what to expect as far as weather.? I would like to avoid narrow roads if possible. Any info would be appreciated, thanks in advance

We didn't make it out there this year,,, but here is a great site to see what hills/mountians you will encounter....
How far did I run? - Map a run with On The Go Map Just get the map up you want, click on the starting and ending point, then left bottom toggle "elevation" . You can follow the route and see all grades in percentage, up or down....

Highway 87 south from Williams is ok but a bit downhill winding heading into Payson.

Highway 77 south from Holbrook then 60 to Phoenix is decent but does go thru Salt River Canyon which is a bit winding but well used by RV'ers.

The better choice would be Highway 377 south from Holbrook to Heber, 260 to Payson, Then 87 to Scottsdale, Mesa and Phoenix. 377 is 2 lane but wide and flat. 260 is 2 lanes for most but very good road with passing lanes. It is wide 4 lanes descending a 6% grade north of Payson. 260 is 4 lane divided south of Payson.

No matter which way you go you're at high altitude until 60-80 miles outside of Phoenix and can see heavy snow if a storm is passing thru. Generally roads are completely free of ice with 1 day of sun. Snow is forecast for today.
