I dont know. These same folks will hit the brakes and come to a dead stop in the road (again not bother to pull to the shoulder) to look at a deer.

I get it is neat to see animals in the wild you have never seen but they completly forget they are not the only people in the world at that moment.

I met a local later that day who was fussing to her coworker about how long it took her to get to work that day due to a herd of bison. The bison she can deal with, they are generally smart enough to move out of the way when cars creep up on them and maybe give a honk to let em know to move......... the humans? not so bright.

Picked a book up at one of the stores in Yellowstone called "Death In Yellowstone" by Lee H. Whittlesey. Very interesting read about the history and various types of ways people have met their demise in the park. As disturbing as the stupidity of some tourists, are the number of instances where the NPS has to defend itself in court because of them (and how often they loose). Think all those "Don't Feed the Bear" and "Stay on the Boardwalk" signs are there to protect you? It's just risk mitigation!

Yes, they are, but a big percentage of folks in this country have never seen one(except on TV). Just like all the kids think that all the food they eat just comes off the shelves and coolers at the local grocery store. Milk comes in jugs or cartons. Chocolate milk from brown cows...

Amazing that the most deaths in Grand Canyon are young men peeing over the edge...

That, or at the Grand Canyon, completely out of the picture. Good part about Yellowstone is that after a day or so, there aren't any bodies to recover or deal with. It all dissolves in the water.

There's a whole book about Death in the Grand Canyon. It's actually a very good book that makes you think. It categorizes the accidents from falls, heat, floods, drowning, airplane accidents, and a few others. And yes, statistically you are more likely to die in the Grand Canyon if you are a male between the ages of 18 and 30.

Surprisingly, some folks come to the national parks to die (suicides).

There might be a few of us on this forum that were in Yellowstone before those signs were posted. Not that I ever feed a bear as a kid from the car window.

Not many in Chicago, and I didn't see one my whole time in Miami. So....

Like the spike in incidents of people trying to drive their car into the Grand Canyon, shortly after the movie "Thelma and Louise" came out?
