HWY 8 from San Diego to Casa Grande
Has anyone driven HWY 8 lately. Have to go to Casa grande first week of December and trying to decide if it would be faster than my normal route using the 10. Hwy 8 is 50 miles shorter. Just returned from Phoenix to SoCal and it took me 6 hours using the 10.
Thanks

Except for the hills near Alpine, I-8 is a flat, safe and easy drive.
If in San Diego why would anyone want to drive all the way north just to catch the 10?
Safe travels

I drove from San Diego to close to the AZ border last month and will be doing it again soon. No problems, sometimes there is a wind warning but to warm for any issues with snow. From Yuma to Casa Grande on I-8 is an easy drive for sure. Faster would depend on where you start from.

Concur that it's a good ride. Good tip about winds, but before noon going East from San Diego is usually never a problem. They do a good job with the warning signs if winds are up, and that is not all of the time.
If it is shorter from where you start, no reason I can think of to not take I8.
Best,
Smitty

We have done 4 round trips from Tucson to S.D. in the past 5 months. While the 8 is just as boring a drive as the 10 it is still a fast, easy route (once you get away from the arcane 55 mph limit in CA). Oh and you'll meet the nice Border Patrol people as you cross into AZ that want to know if you're a US citizen, but that's another story.

Thanks for the info on HWY 8. I am starting from San Juan Capistrano so the 8 is shorter but both routes are easy to get to for me. Will be driving late afternoon and at night mostly.

We travel between Casa Grande and San Clemente a couple times every year. You might wish to use I-805 to I-8 instead of going all the way into downtown San Diego on I-5. We enjoy I-8 and don't think it is as boring as I-10 as well as shorter to CG.
There is a pleasant rest area on I-8 at San Diego County S-1. Easy in and out. Also a good coffee shop in Gila Bend called the "Astro" or something else with a space theme.
By the way, and not to discourage you, it snowed on us twice in the I-8 area in past years. Once it snowed on us from Tecate to Borrego Springs including I-8. Another time we were camped in Hope Valley and it snowed a few inches. Snow is rare in this area.
Have fun, drive safely.

WARNING WILL ROBINSON!!! Didn't realize the start point was so far north.
Please be aware that the southbound route from SJC to I-8, beyond Camp Pendleton (I-5 and especially the 805, south of the 5/805 split) can experience extreme gridlock during the commute hours.
Sometimes we will use SR-78 (it is a freeway) to I-15 to avoid the traffic...actually I-15 all the way to the 8 might be a good idea anyway.
It is very wise to check SIGALERT for realtime conditions:
Sigalert.com San Diego Traffic Map
We even check it on a smart phone, because it can change by the minute.
And...do not take a towed vehicle (car or TT) into any HOV/Carpool lanes. That is prohibited and if stopped, it is a fat fine of well over $300.
Safe travels

My main concern was the road condition. For the most part hwy 10 is a good smooth road.
Is coffee shop easy in/out. I am around 65' with toad.
Yes sigalert is a must if you live in SoCal.
Thanks

Mike-
I-8 was in good, smooth condition as of my last trip.
The "Astro" coffee may require a wide right turn into their parking lot from the main drag thru Gila Bend or park across the street on one of the side streets. We have parked in both locations several times.

Thanks everyone. Drive was 418 miles door to door. Took us 6.5 hours but I did not stop. Only traffic was on the 805 for a couple miles. A nice relaxing night drive. Headed to LD tomorrow with DW to look at some new coaches & headed back Saturday night.
