285 to Ft. Stockton is a bunch shorter if you're going east on I-10. Disclaimer: I haven't been that way lately, might check with a local for road condition and oil field traffic. Safe Travels

I took 54 to I-10 and Van Horn from Carlsbad NM because I had to pick up some mail at the Van Horn USPS office.

If you just need to get to I-10 and going east then the previous post using 285 is probably a better route.

If you do go to Van Horn don't plan on boondocking anywhere. They have an ordinance against it and do hand out tickets.

If you want to take in Guadalupe Nat'l Park from Carlsbad, then 54 is an excellent road to Van Horn. If you just want to head east on I-10, 285 is the shorter way.

Guadalupe has some dry camping spots with flush toilets. McKittrick Canyon is a nice hike as is 'the Peak' (which is strenuous). It's a pretty area if the weather cooperates. It might be hot now and the winds can be bad but usually in the spring.

There is a Passport America park in both Van Horn and Ft. Stockton on I-10 with good prices. Have a good trip.
