The tunnels.... have you read the national park site about the tunnels on the east entrance?

You'll have to unhook toad and driver separately through tunnel. A $15.00 fee is charged to stop two way traffic while you transit tunnel. You must stay in middle of tunnel during transit. Not really a big deal.

Not always. I know it's a regulation , however the two times I went through I didn't have to unhook.

Here's all you want to know about the tunnel from the Nat'l Park site:
http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisi...mel-tunnel.htm
You can drive through without unhooking your toad up to a combined total of 50'.
If you don't want to do the tunnels from Hwy 89 then come in from the other direction from St. George, Utah. It's nice and flat.
The little town of Springdale is a nice place for your RV site, although there are some 40' sites in Watchman campground in the park itself. That's where we stay.

I would definitely unhook the toad. You will find many of the pull outs
not able to accommodate both m.h. and toad. Stopping, looking and taking pic. is the purpose.
We stopped numerous times in the Explorer at the pullouts to take pixs
a few where empty and could accommodate a m.h. pulling in parallel but most required nose in and back out. We left the m.h. at the east intersection of Hwy 89 and 9, drove in and through the park, returned back to Hwy 89 and continued south.
If you are coming from Vegas and passing through the park, coming from
the west, park in the 1st big vistors center, take a shuttle bus to cover the area that is not open to private vehicles, then return to the visitors area to pick up the m.h. and drive out the east entrance in separate vehicles.
If you are coming from the east, leave the m.h. in the camp ground just
before the park, drive through the tunnels and the park in your toad, again take the side canyon trip in the shuttle bus, then return through the tunnels to the east exit and pick up your m.h. By then you will know if you want to hook up or not.
Class C m.h. may not need to be escorted but large Class A will. The edge of the tunnel is 11'4" , the center is 13'1"
Being able to quickly pull over and take pictures and then easily back out and continue made the trip much easier. I got a picture of a ewe kneeling under the mother feeding on the side of the cliff. For me that was a priceless picture.

Here's a view after leaving the tunnel. Can you spot Darth Vader's helmet?

Also keep in mind that "by escort" through the tunnel means the rangers close of the road for oncoming traffic and you just drive down the center of the road through the tunnels. They don't really escort you. It's really no big deal if you're within the height/length restrictions.
You will have a steep, curving downhill once you pass the tunnels. RVers do it all the time but just wanted to warn you. It's not a flat drive!

So you guys that are going through the tunnel,,,, what height is your rig?
We are going to be there in a week,,,, from there we plan on moving to Bryce. It looks like a long ways around to avoid the tunnels.
40' DP, 12'6 tall, towing a 12' enclosed trailer.

The length of your rig is too long to go through. However, I know 45' busses and MH's go through nearly every day, especially the big tour busses.
Prohibited Vehicles
Vehicles over 13 feet 1 inch tall, Semi-trucks, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, vehicles weighing more than 50,000 pounds, single vehicles over 40 feet long, combined vehicles over 50 feet long. All Bicycles. Pedestrians.

Not much site seeing going this route with 40' and Toad. We stayed in Kanab for a week and toured the whole area in our toad. Makes for a nice day trip from Kanab, through Zion and back to Kanab. Not to mention all the other things to see and do in the area. If you are an animal lover, don't miss Best Friends Animal Sanctuary just out of Kanab a few minutes on your way to Zion on 89. Much better way to, IMHO,,
Kanab is a nice little town for a base camp.
Stayed at the Kanab RV Coral. Nice park.
