Interstate 65

Will be traveling I65 to Chicago next month. Any interesting things to see within 200 miles along the way. No toad but can rent cars as needed

Possible Detour

Right now, electronic highway signs around Indianapolis, Indiana are noting that I-65 is Closed north of Indianapolis and advising an alternate route to Chicago. I have no idea how long this will be in effect. Hopefully, it will be open again by the time you make your trip. However, you might want to investigate the situation a little.

I-65 is closed in Indiana south of Lafayette. Think I read someplace that it will be closed until mid-September.

Here's a link INDOT says there is no timetable for reopening of I-65 northbound bridge in Lafayette | Fox 59

I'm not sure where you will be starting your journey on I-65, but we just came over I-65 from Indy to Louisville. Construction, construction and construction all along the way. The bridge in Louisville would best be described starting with the word Cluster. It was a rather tense drive between one lane roads and crossovers with the always present Jersey barriers. If I had it to do over I would have taken I-74 down to Cinnci and then down 75.

Glad I found this before starting a new thread. We are heading to UP Michigan tomorrow afternoon planning to stop at Prophetstown State Rec Area in Lafayette IN right on 65.

Just saw the detour comments on the park website today. I am hearing it is taking up to 4 hours to take the detour to the campground. I am thinking of taking Rt 39 north out of Lebanon and coming in the back way. Hoping that might be less congested than Rt 52 and 231.

Anyone made the trip recently or are you a local and know the best way there.

That would probably be the best route. Prophetstown is a nice park with a store with farm fresh seasonal foods. We've not been able to get a spot there since they opened the water park, but it looks like it's more available when school starts.

I would take another state rather than drive on I-65. Has to rank at the top of the worse highways in the USA

Not sure, but you might be able to do it the "old way" - US 52 to US 41 (remember North by Northwest with Jimmy Stewart?). That is the way my parents did it when I was a kid before I-65 was built.

US 31 (N/S) runs right up the middle of the State.

I have heard the Rt 52 detour is taking as long as 4 hours. That's why I was hoping for a less travelled route like 39. Considered 421 but it has a bridge out as well. Is there an exit above the sinking bridge but below Lafayette where I can get back on the interstate. If I didn't have reservations I would just shoot over to 74

I-65 is horrible.
I should know, I live here.
The detour of 65 is not that bad and only in the north bound section around Lafayette.
