Is Nuevo Progreso safe?

We haven't crossed over to Nuevo Progreso for a couple of years because of all the Mexico violence. Fun place to go, though . . . . anyone care to comment on whether it is advisable?

Thanks.

Been once this year, town is very quite, a lot of shops closed. The US parking lots were only partly full, the Marines have left town. We were planning on doing the Christmas Party at the School again, it is up in the air now. A lot of folks feel safe and still make the trip. Check the McAllen Monitor, and RGV TV web sites for News storys.
Be Careful

That is the best advice you can/will receive. I remember the times we visited Progresso, 2-3 times a week during the winter months. One time I carried a backpack containing water bottles, snacks, camera, and to carry items we purchased back to the RV. The U.S. border guard checked my passport card, then spun me around quickly and began patting down my backpack. He asked what I was carrying, and I told him. He then waved me through.
The next day a bomb detonated at the Mexico end of the bridge, it was packed in a backpack.
The next year we didn't winter in the RGV. That was the year there was a gun battle just South of the Canadian Store, 4 blocks South of the bridge.
We have visited MX many times; to Progresso, Juarez, Al - well, I can't spell the other two towns. Juarez was the only uncomfortable MX border town. The small border towns depend upon American tourists money for a living. Hopefully conditions in MX will improve to where our state department lifts their travel warnings.
