Jacksonville FL Military Camping
Hi Everyone,
I am going to the Jacksonville Area for the first time with the RV and I see that there are several FamCamps in the area. Can someone give me a recommendation as to witch ones are better. Or perhaps a nice State or Federal Park in the area. No plans other than a visit or two to do some shopping on the base.
Thanks,
Leon

Mayport
Mayport NAS. We had a spot over looking the water and watched the ships as they passed by. Need to get a base sticker if you don't have one.

Thank you,
I have stickers, can you tell me the name of the Park? I see they have a few in the area. Is this Pelican Roost?
Thank you,
Leon

The name of the Mayport Naval station rv park is Pelican Roost. We stayed there a couple years ago. The sites are assigned by computer, but ask anyhow if you can have the front row. I believe they can override the computer. Be nice and happy when you call. Attitude begets attitude just about anywhere. The Mayport NEX is not very big, but J'Ville is just a short hop down the highway. The commissary is off-site on the main highway.
Happy trails.

We stayed in spot #10, right in the middle of the front row. Think 1 thru 19 is the front row with clear viewof the ships and bay. Can't beat the view.

We are currently staying at the military campground at Sub Base Kings Bay. It is not a large campground and has numerous awards as best military campground East Coast. Not water front though.

There is a large NEX next door to the commissary off base at Mayport. A HUGE NEX at JAX NAS.

We loved Pelican's Roost. They allowed us to dry camp in the grassy area for a reduced cost ($7 per day). Stayed 2 weeks. We were "parents of active duty" not "retired military," so I'm not sure what the pricing would have been if we'd been in the retired category...
Be forewarned, two weeks there and I started sailboat shopping...! if either of you has thought about sailing off over the horizon, a few weeks at Pelican's Roost might mark a turning point for you!!!

How long are you all there for? I will be there this Saturday and Sunday in D1 Overflow. Then on to Pelican Roost on Monday. So is it a nice place?
Thanks,
Leon

For the military members, including retired. Found that you can book rv sites at many Navy location online at DOD Lodging more and more military famcamps are starting to use the system. We just booked one for next summer in WA on the site.

Yes. both Kings Bay and Pelican Roost both told me that they are using this new system and to bear with them while they put in my info. Some still require you to call first. Thanks for the link.
