Jan/Feb Warm-up Place
Looking for suggestions for RV parks in RGV to warm up (DW considers anything below 50 COLD) when the weather goes south during Jan/Feb. Would like a place we can stay 4-5 weeks without committing to the whole winter. Golf and fishing near by are desirable.

We went to Lajitas about a year and a half ago. Don't know if Big Bend National Park is technically the RGV but it is definitely in a valley with the Rio Grande river and it met the fifty degree requirement.

Yes, RGV is the Rio Grande Valley, or simply "the valley" to Texans.

Lajitas is on the Rio Grande, but not in "the valley". Can be way too cold in Jan/Feb, but nice and warm in the summer months. I haven't played the new Blackjack Golf Course, but the old Ambush at Lajitas was a great course before it flooded out.

The inland RGV area sees temperatures in the low 40's during Jan/Feb at night occasionally. At least we have experienced that in Donna, TX. You can go further South to Brownsville, TX to stay above 50* though.
You might find the weather data base useful.

I understand most of the better places are reserved by June/July each year. We have difficulty getting reservations in Rockport in March sometimes.
Talk to Jay at the Boomers Christmas rally. He is familiar with the valley.

The areas below and above McAllen are loaded with RV Parks. Just pick one and book a couple of days and then look around. Don't commit to a month until you have seen the area and the park. There are lots of very nice places and lots of really BAD places. Stop at a American Legion or VFW and talk with some Winter Texans, they will point you in the right direction.

Thanks Jim, I'll do that. Always some good advice around the Boomers.
Where do ya'll stay in Rockport? We spent a couple of weeks at Port A last year in April and almost blew away on the beach front. We'll probably hit the Rockport/Port A area again this spring.

Hey Jimmy,
You can't beat the fishing all along that area.
We just found out about the Matagorda RV Park operated by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). I have only looked at it on the web and it looks nice. Their price list looks like they have the summer/winter rates reversed, but I don't think so. Cheaper in the Winter months than summer - go figure with all the Winter Texans coming in. The site borders on the Colorado River and the Gulf. Not as far south, but still not to bad of a clime.

I have not stayed there, but I drove by and looked at it a year or so ago. Its fairly new, no trees except small ones they planted. Every site looks to be level and concrete, easy access and should be no problem for big rigs with toad/boat attached. It is right at the river mouth to the gulf. The new bridge across the ICW should be complete now to make access even easier (the old swing bridge could back up traffic going down river at times).
