Does anyone have any comment on Jekyll Island and the campground? How far from the campground is the beach? Is it a nice beach?

We were there in 2006. The beach is not far from the campground, traveling back to the mainland. Nice beach. We let the dog(s) run on the beach, in March. You won't be disappointed.

The campground is wooded with mature trees and very shady. I would go back again.

You can get to the beach more readily on bike than foot, I believe. The ocean is right across from the campground, on the other side of the road, with a nice walking/biking path, but I don't believe there is any good beach access.

The public beaches are actually a couple miles back down the road where there is excellent access to the beach.

We were there last week. There are signs posted that dogs aren't allowed on the beach but we never saw any beach patrol. I think dogs are discouraged because of the sea turtle nests. May, June and July are sea turtle nesting and moving to sea months. The island is clean, not tourist type at all, which is nice. There is one small grocery store, no fast food restaraunts. There are no lighted beaches but that's because of the sea turtles. We weren't successful with collecting sea shells. We did enjoy watching the dolphins play.

The campground staff is very nice but the campground had very crowded sites and the layout of the camp was difficult. I wouldn't want to arrive after dark and try to figure out which site. The sites were very shady but covered in layers of old leaves. Many sites are extremely close together. There is no paved pads. There were a couple of sites designated handicapped that had paved sidewalks.
