First, Virginia CG in Jackson was a HUGE disappointment to us (very small sites and tight interior roads).... and at over $100 a night we though that was ridiculous..... I’d NEVER pay that for a campsite.... but that’s just me....
100% Agree...Did a walk-thru.

We have since discovered Gros Ventre CG about 11 miles N of Jackson heading towards Teton NP and we’ve now stayed there 9 times (last August most recently).

It offers beautiful sites in trees with frequent visits by moose in the CG.... One of our all-time favorite places to stay)
We stayed here too (8 nights), saw moose just about every day from our campsite. Along the rear of the loops is the Gros Ventre River

Flagg Ranch for Yellowstone; Colter Bay Village RV Park (wife's all-time favorite CG) for Tetons...

We always come in from the South and camp in this order - Gros Vantre then Colter Bay then Flagg Ranch..... Inside Yellowstone eastward, we liked Grant's Village then Bridge Bay RV Park (resident bison herd lives in this CG which is way cool).... Westward we usually go out the west gate and stay in the city of West Yellowstone which has numerous CG's....

You need to make reservations NOW for all but Gros Ventre.... Not sure how shutdown has affected the reservation system.... Guess a phone call will answer that....

If you're interested, I'd be more than happy to talk to you and assist you with the knowledge I have of the areas you're headed to... Just PM me if you're interested....

I don't understand why you would stay at Colter Bay for the Tetons and then drive only 17 miles to Headwaters for Yellowstone?

Saves an additional 34 mile drive daily..... plus - over the years of coming, we have favorite places we like to visit from each CG..... comes down to personal preference I guess......

Gros Ventre appeals to me but the risk (even if small) of not getting a site makes it a deal breaker. Would love to stay in Colter Bay but I missed that boat. Iíve got reservations at the Virginian for now. Thinking about switching to Fireside RV Park in Wilson. They are just as expensive but sites appear to be larger fir my rig (60+ft)

For those in the know, if I go for a campsite at Gros Ventre and the worst case scenario happens and canít get a site, what are my chances of getting a site somewhere else?

In nine years of going to Gros Ventre Iíve NEVER seen anyone turned away....

Most folks prefer the FHU ďall the comforts of homeĒ.

Also - just up the road is Colter Bay which has two different CGís - one with FHUís requiring reservations and the other a Boondocking one thatís first come first served.... (it has 100ís of sites)

PM me and Iíll give you my number and Iíll give you a few suggestions that might ease your worry some....

Regarding staying at Gros Ventre, I'm going to hedge my bets a bit. I currently have 2 nights reserved at Virginian RV park. If we leave around 530am, we should arrive at Gros Ventre around 930am at the latest. If we can get an electric site at that time, I'll take it and cancel reservations at Virginian. If not, we will just stick with what we have.

Gros Ventre campground is only 13 miles from Virginian RV in Jackson. It's not going to take you 4 hours to get there!

I left out some important data: West Yellowstone to Gros Ventre would be a 4 hour trip going through Idaho. Sorry about that.

Unable to edit this post si let me add that we are spending 5 nights prior in West Yellowstone and would be traveling through Idaho on way to Tetons
