The Great Outdoors in Titusville is the most convenient and most expensive. How far away do you still consider close? Mims has camping as well (Seasons in the Sun, KOA and Willow Lakes (not good the last time I was there)) and there is a very shady campground called Manatee Hammock in Titusville.

mims ??
looking at a 2 night stay with a one day visit to Kennedy Space Center.
The Great Outdoors in Titusville might be overkill.
it's been years since I was at Kennedy Space Center.
am I thinking about the correct place ? rockets, etc. sitting outside, bus tour out to Launch Pad 39B ????

In late June we stayed at Manatee Hammock RV (County park?) Park. They accept Passport America so the fee was about $15 a night - the normal fee is about $30. This park is close to the highway out to the space center and yes, rockets, & tours & gift shops. I'd suggest you go near the opening time and take the bus out to the launching site - crowds get heavy in the afternoon. When you get back from the trip take the "launch simulator" for a good ride. The cinemax movie was also very good. We arrived about 10 AM and felt we had seen everything we were interested in by 3 PM in the afternoon. On our visit we could see from a long distance the shuttle in launch position. One other minor thing is if you are a senior you get a discount at the ticket booths.
Enjoy
Bob

Camping near the Space Center does not get any better than staying at Jetty Park. It is right on the ocean and adjacent to the Port Canaveral inlet. Those cruise liners, including the Disney ships, are REALLY big when you are standing next to them as they go through the inlet. It is near impossible to get a site there during a Shuttle launch, but that is not a concern anymore. Great fishing, great beach and fantastic view of any rocket launches (Delta, Atlas, etc). Great place to stay.

just read the rules at Jetty Park - cannot leave dogs in RV if you leave the campground. that won't work - we were planning a day trip to Kennedy Space Center.

even if Space Coast would answer - won't work.
rules say dogs under 35 pounds allowed.
that would require us to leave more than half of the Old English Sheepdog somewhere else.
going to try the KOA - they are usually dog friendly.

I can understand that 'rule'. It can get very hot in FL. Sometimes the power leaves something to be desired. It can and does go off from time to time. Leaving a pet in a RV depending on the AC is taking a big risk down there. With the high heat this summer, the risk would apply to many places. The rule was probably put in place after the power shut down and a few tourists came back from a day of seeing the sights to find a dead pet. While it is unlikely that it will happen, it can, and you are risking the life of your pet leaving them in a RV for a day unattended. Rather than leaving the animal in the RV, find a kennel to keep them safe for the day.
