Kentucky Derby | Camping Locations ?

Last minute - we are headed to the Derby. I saw there are two KOA's in the area. The closest one to Church Hill Downs is already filled.

I have seen many Wal-Marts on allstays, has anyone stayed there and just drove into the race?

We've stayed at Gramdmas CG in Shepherdsville about 15 miles south of Louisville but certainly close enough to do the derby and the area. Nice and clean park and would stay there again.

We live in the Louisville area and there aren't many campgrounds. Walmarts are fine for overnights. There is also General Butler State Park in Carrollton north on I71 toward Cincinnati. It's not our best state park but an option if you have a tow or rent a car. Don't forget you can also overnight at a Cracker Barrel or Sams. Do be aware if not local to choose east of I65 for safer parking lot stays if you are close in to Louisville.

While in the area, you should visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and the Bourbon Trail Map - Kentucky Bourbon Trail. You can take a tour bus, or drive yourself like I did and avoid the crowds.

And yes, the Bourbon Trail. ). While in Bardstown stop to see the Stephen Foster Story, an outdoor musical that is entertaining for all ages.

Thanks for the info. We were able to get a site at the KOA South due to cancellation. Should be good times!

ejm4, please report back on your experience going to the Derby. It has been on my bucket list for many years and could now become a reality, with my 5th wheel. My father was a trainer and I grew up involved with racing horses at all levels (poop scooper to exercise boy) during my youth and into my 20's. I would love to start planning an Eastern swing to incorporate the Derby next year.
