Key West 2016/17
We're planning a trip down to the keys in December and January. We like to be close to water, don't need a lot of activities @ the cg. but with hook ups. Looking for suggestions. Ty

Are you looking to stay on Key West or have a desire to stay close to Key West?

It's a small island with even smaller roads so don't plan on driving around. I think Boyd's is the closest to the downtown action if that is what you are looking for. If you are looking for sand/beach nearby you may need to stay somewhere along the keys. Look up campgrounds in the area and google earth them to see what they are close to.

Boyd's it just off Key West on Stock Island, close enough to KW that you can walk, run, rent a scooter or gold car and be on the main island. They have waterfront sites
Blue Water Key is approx 13 miles away from KW. Much nicer camping area & also a lot more $$$ to stay. Totally private camp sites, one of the best camping areas in this country. They have waterfront lots which have their own boat dock, gazeebo etc
At MM30-40 sugarloaf KOA, I think this is the most family oriented with more kids activities. Also has a few small/tight waterfront spots and also has a marina
These so far are the only camping areas I have visited & they all have good & bad.... Whatever you do I would suggest getting reservations sooner rather then later.
There are a few more campiing areas that other people are speaking very highly of, one is at the 7 Mile bridge which has waterfront & docks....

There are no public RV parks/CG's on Key West Island. Oh, one is listed BUT, it is full of semi-pemanent travel trailers, the longest of which is perhaps 25-26'.
If you hold a military ID card, NASKW CG is available on Key West Island. It's about 4 blocks from downtown.

The closer you get to Key West, the more you're going to pay. When I'm in the area, I'll stay at Jolly Roger Travel Park in Marathon. It's about an hour out.

We stayed at Geiger Key RV park for a month last year. There's about 26 spaces of which half are on the water. Gravel spots and an adjacent restaurant and bar. It's near the NAS so the jets can be loud but the drive into Key West is about 10 minutes.

There is Lazy Lakes RV Resort on Sugarloaf Key about mm 22 which i have heard nice thinks about but have not visited. Am sure you can get info by Googling it. It is not far from the KOA there!
We stay at the Navy base CG when we go!

I second Boyd's - stayed there in April. It takes about 10 minutes to get to downtown KW in your towed vehicle, depending on traffic. Public parking wasn't too bad if you plan so that you are near a trolley stop and then get off and on at the different attractions. Some public transportation is available if needed from the area of Boyd's. At Boyd's we opted for a water front site and it was nice. There was a constant breeze in April that was welcomed. The keys are larger than you think. I have a friend that would annually stay at several different keys for about a week each ending with a week at Boyd's during a month long trip. He made reservations about six to eight months out to get it to work. You got plenty of time if you are looking at 16/17 to include reasonably priced state parks which usually require reservations well in advance.
