Kirtland Fam camp

WE are on our third night at Kirtland Air Force base in Albuquerque . It is a nice park for the area. The older part has some nice landscaping and a dog park! Weather is great! The overflow lot is just a gravel area.

We use it every year in January. Getting someone in the office at that time of year is sometimes a bit iffy, but I think that's a Base Commander issue rather than the FAMCAMP's. We like the new spots to the east as they're very big and easy in/out. I was stationed there for 5 years and just LOVE the area and the food. Have you been to El Pinto on NW 4th? We never miss it.

I have been using Fam Camps since I got my RV. Really like them & it's great to hang out with fellow vets. Hope Base Commanders don't cut them to much during hard economic times.

I believe they fall under MWR programs so they are required to be self sustaining to a point. Many of the old free or inexpensive extras have disappeared due to funding and the push for self funded activities. Very few Posts/Bases still have 2 or more Golf Courses and even fewer have the old O club or NCO's clubs. Our military Marina went under about 14 years ago and then a couple years ago a new Post Commander came in and reallocated funds to restore it. It's still no where near the accommodations from before but it's back and with increased use the talk is they may add hook ups and even a real building (temp shed now) the boat and jet ski rentals are the money maker right now.
