Knoebel Amusement Resort

Anyone been to the Knoebel Amusement Resort near Wilkes Barre PA? We are concerned by their lack of water and sewer connections at the individual campsites, but have heard the Amusement Park is great and relatively inexpensive. We are looking at the pros and cons regarding our four wheelchairs for about a week next summer...terrain, distances, etc. Their website also cites several floods in recent years. They have a second campground about 5 miles away, but shuttle service may not handle the wheelchairs.

Any info would be appreciated, but we also recall losing our radiator and transmission at Wilkes Barre last spring (two weeks in a motel), so we have mixed emotions about the area.

We've been to Knoebels twice, once as a camper (Aug 06) and once just to ride the rides (June 08). The Amusement park is super! That part would be fun for all I think. You can pay tickets for just what you want to ride. My family highly recommends the Phoenix roller coaster and the "best bumper cars in the country."

The main campground is nearby but would still require some walking to get to and from. I seem to remember they run a mini-shuttle around the campground to bring people down from the upper sites. The campground is large and well-stuffed with mostly popups and tents. The campground is not really set up for today's bigger rigs but is more in line with the nostalgia of the amusement park.

We only stayed 2 nights so we weren't concerned with the lack of water. I didn't notice if they sent trucks around. We had about a 30 minute wait to dump our tanks before pulling out. The campground is hilly. I do not think the little bus they send around would be handicapped accessible. You would want to request a site that is near the bottom/entrance of the campground.

I have no experience with the campground that is farther away. I wanted to try it this summer but when I called both campgrounds were booked. We ended up parking our rig at a hotel off of 81 since it was just one night on the way to somewhere else and I don't like boondocking in parking lots. Obviously you wouldn't want to do that for a week and you're making plans well in advance so you should be able to get a site either place. The map of the further campground looks like it has fewer sites with more room in each. Maybe I'll get to check it out in another couple of years when my kids need a Phoenix "fix."

It sounds like it is a pretty hilly terrain and not very well suited to our wheelchair or motorhome needs. Although the amusement park sounds like it would be very enjoyable, I think we'll keep looking for a more suitable location for our next summer travels. Thanks for the detailed info.
