Lake Havasu

We will be taking a trip in the next few weeks from Albuquerque to Grand Canyon to Lake Havasu to San Diego to Manhattan Beach.
Any suggestions on things to do or places to stay or avoid along this route?
thanks!

Well the big attraction there is the London Bridge. Beyond that and a gondola ride (if he's still doing them) I have no suggestions.

Years ago I stayed in both Havasu Springs RV park and Havasu Falls RV park. I had paid for a week at Havasu Springs and left 4 days early due to conflicts with full time residents who thought they owned the park (they didn't). Havasu Falls is a nice park but I couldn't walk between the coachs when the sides were extended cause they were so close together. At the time Verizon had no presence in Lake Havesu but that might have changed, haven't been back through there in years.

Everyone's list will be a bit different depending on how they enjoy their time. I live just north of San Diego so will mention a few things nearby.

As for where to stay, we have state parks, but I find these to be either difficult to reserve, or just bland. There are parks that are very near the ocean or the bay. They are more than we want to spend (maybe because we are locals). I would however spend that money if we were coming from far away and this was one of the few times that I would be in the area.

We've had friends stay at Santee Lakes who were pleased not on,y by the park, but that it was centrally located. When we just want to exercise the coach a bit, we like to stay at either Pala Casino RV Resort, or Pechanga Casino RV Resort. The mountains, bays, ocean, and city life are all accessible within an hour from these campgrounds.

With that out of the way, it is what to do. There are somewhere near 90 golf courses in San Diego County. Golf is available 365 days a year. Pechanga Casino (above) has a wonderful adjacent golf course called Journey.

Not far from either of the casinos is the wine region of Temecula. There is also the large refractive telescope at Palomar mountain. There is also the old mining town of Julian. We have two world class zoo's. Two wonderful bays for all types of water sports.

We even have two light houses. The first (Cabrillo Light House) was built high on Point Loma (to maximize visibility out to sea). They soon found that our fog completely took away that advantage, so another was build closer to sea level. The original lighthouse remains and is designated a National Monument.

Balboa Park (where the San Diego Zoo resides has wonderful museums, the Old Globe Theater, restaurants, and walkways). This was the site of World Exposition. It has lots of wonderful architecture and hospitality houses from around the world.

We also have commercial ventures like Sea World and Lego Land. And a healthy selection of micro breweries.

Any and all of these things are just an hour away (well maybe more if you venture out during commute times) away from the three RV parks that I mentioned.

I would be remiss if I didn't suggest a stop off in Tucson. This is a wonderful time of year for an extended visit. It is one of our favorites.

Oh, as for places to avoid, and this is just us, we no longer feel safe crossing the border and going into Mexico. Nothing bad has happened to us there. Plenty of people that we know have not had bad experiences. We simply choose not to go there (okay, maybe we are just being over cautious...but it is what it is).

Hope that this helps you if you are in the area.

Enjoy your trip and travel safely.

We just stayed at Havasu SP CG. It's a nice place with spread out, large campsites. They have 50A service, but no sewer hookup. We were in a 36' Class A plus toad.

Havasu City on thurs nites downtown is normally a car show. Cool to walk the street. THere is Desert Bar on the weekends down Parker way. It’s about a 4 mile dirt road out to the bar. Usually have a band and food trucks. Open from noon to dusk only.

There is almost always something going on in Lake Havasu during the "winter" months. Check out https://golakehavasu.com/events/?ref=upcomingevents for events during the time you are there.

Spend a couple nights or weeks on the colorado at moabi regional park. Try to get a site out at the end of the park on the river. We spent a couple of months there during winter and it was awesome.

Go for a float down the river and check out the "needles".
