Grand Haven State Park
Pentwater State Park
Ludington State Park

All nice parks on or very near the shore.

On the Wisconsin side, Door County. Peninsula state park is great, but getting in is like winning the lottery. We always like Wagon Trail, if they have a site available that you'll fit on. We have stayed there in our 43' coach with no problem. Door County is easily worth at least a week stay.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the whole Leelanau Peninsula around it. Awesome!

If you're planning to get lakeshore campsites this summer....good luck. They go fast.

On the Michigan side -- Warren Dunes State Park (a little south of South Haven), Holland State Park (near Holland) and finally Orchard Beach State park (near Manistee) are all nice places as well. Orchard Beach is one of our favorites in the fall ... the campground sits high on a bluff - and if you can get a spot at the south end of the campground, there are some great views of the lake (even if it's not "beach weather").

We left Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore about 6 days ago, and then stopped at Wilderness State Park near Mackinaw City. Camped right on Lake Michigan beach about 25 feet from the water with a beautiful beautiful view. And just incase you want to explore another lake beside Michigan, we are currently in Brimley State Park within 35 feet of Lake Superior beach and another gorgeous view(It snowed last night!). Heading to Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the AM.

I would highly recommend all of these.

X2 on Door County. Went there last fall and going again. Wagon Trail is about as far north as you can get in Door. No interstates, light traffic and stars at night so bright.

Bigd9,

It looks like you were in Michigan in May. We're planning a trip up that way next year and plan to go in early May as well perhaps late April. Cold weather doesn't bother us however I'm concerned about mosquitos and black flies. Did you have any issues with insects? Also, would you advise campground reservations for this time of year? We have a 40' Class A. Thanks.

We are in a 43' and have had no problems with reservations and mosquitos. Not familiar with black flies which I guess means we have not encountered any. However, we have not been able to secure more than 5 nights at a time because the majority of state parks are booked solid on week-ends. You can find private parks available but at a higher rate and the majority of casinos have designated RV parking.

We have had a beautiful trip so far through Michigan, staying as State Parks that are half full at best. One State Park, Wilderness, didn't have any water when we arrived, but they turned it on right in the middle of our stay.

Bugs, YES! At Sleeping Bear Dunes all the way up to Mackinaw City and Island, the bugs that look like mosquitoes were very bad. Billions and billions of them. However, they did not bite. We were told they hatch in early/mid May and last till late May. They did not slow us down exploring everything the beautiful state has to offer. We are now in the upper part of Upper Michigan Peninsula and having a blast. No bugs here so far. We love this time of the year to camp and explore. One more week, then we have to turn our coach south and head back toward home. Then it is off to southern Florida for a vacation with my daughter's family, then off to California for a wedding then off to New York for a rally. Going to be another good travel year!
