I estimate 3 days to make the trip, is this an "A to B" trip or are we looking to enjoy it.
When is the trip?
Can we take a few more days?
Can we stop to see some sights?
How much time do we have in total?

While mine still touches the I's when necessary, it avoids them in favor of National and State Parks, makes the trip FUN/MEMORABLE.
IMHO, there is just too much to see and do along this route to just go from A to B, you will never get back the day you missed all this, yes you could come back but why not just at least drive through all these Unbelievable spots on your trip.
JMHO,

Have stayed at all the Favorite is Stagecoach on the Lake - But also have spent the night in the Wal*Mart parking lot, so not sure I'm the one to give advice.
