Latest on Estes Park CGs?

Planning out trip out west for summer of 2016, which includes RMNP and staying in Estes.

However, the reviews on the CGs there are all over the place, loved it, hated it, beautiful, gone downhill, the floods destroyed them, etc.

What is the latest on Elk Meadow, Spruce Lake, or other suggestions.

Thanks

We just returned from a trip to EP.....stayed at Elk Meadows...we thought it just fine. We needed a campground with a cabin to rent also. Spruce Lake is owned by the same company, and is right next door....we wanted that one originally, but they were full. We did drive through it though, and thought it very nice! We had no rain, except some evening showers, temps were from a low of 36, to about high 70....absolutely gorgeous!

A lot of the camp grounds on the river/creek were flooded in 2013 and this past Spring the water was high. The three campgrounds I'll discuss had no evidence of flooding unless mentioned.

The easiest in/out and closest park to downtown is Spruce. Spruce and Elk are right outside the Rocky Mountain National Park entrance.

Manor RV Park (June 2015)
Nice place and they had a free breakfast one morning. They had a lot of rain in Spring so the ground was a bit soft. It is a bit hilly getting in and out but the site was level. We'd stay there again, and would have our past trip but when I was calling for reservations I got their voicemail and called Spruce Creek. Nice people working and staying at the park.

Spruce Creek (Aug 2015)
We did four nights/five days in a 40 dp. We had spot 49 which was nice but across the fence is the playground for Manor RV Park, we didn't mind. The park is nice but with taxes ($22/night) four nights was $360. We'd stay here again.

Elk Meadow
If you have anything over 40 this is where I'd stay for sure. We drove through the park twice. Great view, most of the spots are pull through but didn't look as level as Spruce Creek and very little to no trees in the park. We will likely stay here next time to give it a try.

Thanks to both of you for taking time to reply with very insightful information. Starting to lock down our plans, so this is greatly appreciated!

Here is one I will add. Now I will say up front that we have a fully self-contained 45' diesel pusher and no kids/grandkids traveling with us, so we don't need anything but water, sewer, a clear shot to the satellites in the SW, quiet, and 50A power. We could care less about just about anything else. The most reasonable, nice RV park in Estes Park is just outside of town at a Larimer (?) County-owned Mary's Lake RV park. It is across the road from a very small lake (Mary's Lake) generating hydroelectric power. It is about 3 or 4 miles out of town. It is a big place, with dirt/gravel pads. It is much less expensive than the other parks that have been discussed, but we had the park largely to ourselves (maybe 10 other rigs out of several hundred spots occupied last September. This park used to get TERRIBLE reviews due to some apparently hard-to-deal-with park management people in the office, but, they have been replaced and the current ladies are very nice and accommodating. We had a very nice week here a year ago and would still be our choice the next time we visit Estes Park. Each site has a metal fire ring, and good wood is available at the office for those outside sits on cool Colorado nights.

My opinion is that none of the other named parks are worth what they charge, and only can get away with it because they are in a tourist destination. Be sure and reserve a night for dinner at Smokin' Dave's Bar-B-Q near Spruce Creek Park, and there is an Indian/Nepalese restaurant downtown (Nepal's Cafe) which is a Nepalese mom-and pop restaurant serving great food and has a great outside eating area if you are there when the weather is cool. Lovely. Smokin' Dave has excellent Bar-B-Q and a good selection of cold, draft beers. Try the Bristol Brewing Co (Colorado Springs) Laughing Lab (an Irish ale) which is fantastic. Enjoy

We stayed at Spruce Lake when we were there last September. It's clean and well kept. The only negative was when the wind kicked up from a certain direction, it caused a lot of dust in the air.

There is a cute shop on the corner on the right as you leave Spruce Lake. There is a decent grocery on one side and a souvenir/clothing store/s on the other of the building. If you're looking for a place for supper, check out the Rock Inn. Really good!

Make sure to do the Old Fall Road drive.
