Looking for a nice beach destination for early summer

Hi, we live in the mid-Hudson valley in NY and are looking for a nice ocean beach destination within a 6 to 8 hour drive. We'd like to be within walking distance of the beach and nightly cost is not an issue. I've done some research through RV Park Reviews and a lot of the state parks on the water are already booked up...

Hither Hills State Park in Montauk used to be a beautiful place but you have no chance of getting a spot there unless you're related to the governor.

Hi StevieG,
My assumption is you might want to actually get in the water. Therefore, I will not consider New England possibilities. Consider southern New Jersey. Like almost to Cape May.

The Depot Travel Park 609-884-2533
Cape May Mobile Estates 609-884-3203
Sea Shore Campsites 800-313-2267
Adventure Bound Camping Resorts 609-465-4440
None of these are directly on the ocean, but close. There are other choices, but this gives you a beginning.

If you want directly on the beach, consider Myrtle Beach, SC. It is farther than you want to travel, but there are many choices directly on the beach.
Pirate Land - 800-443-2267
Ocean Lakes 800-341-4749
Lakewood Camping Resort 877-525-3966

In Delaware (Cape Henlopen at 302-645-8983), Virgina (Outdoor Resorts, VA Beach at 800-333-7515), Maryland (Castaways at 410-213-0097) and North Carolina (Camp Hatteras at 252-987-2777) are along the ocean or really close.

Datrbone, I seem to be running into this at every beach front state park I look at... I looked at Hither Hills and it looks exactly like what we are looking for. A week would be great, but I couldn't even find a couple of days... It's so unfair being only February, that the entire summer is already booked up. Is there a lot of the same people making multiple reservations or just that many people that want to go there?

I lived on LI since 1952. I worked summers at Jones beach State PArk and spent many happy days out at Hither Hills. We rode our bicycles (and later motorcycles) out there and camped in tents. Even in the late 60's/early 70's before they took online reservations people would camp out in front of the State PArk Commission office a couple of days prior to JAnuary 1 when they started taking reservations.

Yes, it sucks. I wouldn't be surprised if there were the same groups of people getting reservations for the summer. It's an excellent park. You might be able to get a spot due to a cancellation but the drive out there is long and there isn't (to my knowledge) anyplace to stay in an RV in the event you strike out.
I believe there is a camp site at Sunken Meadow State PArk on the North SHore on Long Island Sound but it's not in the same class as Hither Hills

Maybe if you had a NYS politician in the family.....

Looks like there could be some availability here:

Maryland Department of Natural Resources - Maryland Park Service

On the Va. side you could look at Tom's Cove on Chincoteague Island...not on the ocean but on the Assateague Channel.

Skipper thanks for checking! I need to stay in loop H, which is the only electric loop in the park. I don't mind running the genny for a day or two, but I'm not going to keep the generator running for 3 to 4 days. The only availability for loop H is mid May, which is still a little cool for the beach.
