We are leaving Pelican's Roost, Mayport Naval Station, FL on Tuesday morning on our way back to Chicago area and would like to stop off for the night in the Atlanta area. I am aware of the Military campgrounds in the area but would like something closer to I-75. Any suggestions? Need to get back A.S.A.P. otherwise would stay another couple weeks here in Florida.

Sorry can't help on the CG but can say bring out your long johns as it suppose to finally get cold up north.

Stone Mountain has the best campground and facilities in the area, IMO.
Its about 10 miles east of 285 on US78 towards Snellville. We stay there about 6-8 times a year for business markets in ATL, that we must attend.
Very friendly and beautiful area. Park is the size of San Francisco and owned by the taxpayers of GA. If you are not in a hurry there is plenty there to do, even in the winter. If you pass through quickly this time... I promise you will stay longer the next. They have a great website, google "stone mountain" and you will see.

There is a KOA just off 75 at Cartersville, GA that is real convenient for an overnight.

Doddins AFB has a camp ground across from the BX, about 1 mile off 75. Marietta exit Delk Rd.

There is a nice park about an hour north of Atlanta in Adairsville, GA. Gets you through Atlanta traffic so you don't have to deal with it in the AM. It called Harvest Moon and is really clean and nice. Some of the cleanest bathrooms we've ever seen at a campground. They have many large pullthru's so if your in a MH, 5er or TT you won't have to unhook. It's about a mile to the west of I-75.

Allatoona Lake at Red Top Mountain State Park..close by to I-75 and great campsites...easy access to expressway and Cartesville..Might want to eat at Doug's Place in Emerson..Country Hooters you might say..

Thanks for all the suggestions. We stayed at Atlanta South Campground. Not the best around. Bathrooms were not too clean. Mold in the showers and Bath house looked like it was in disrepair. Very crowded spaces. Lucky there were not a lot of camper there at the time we were there. Too cold. Would not recommend the place.
Best campground we stayed at on our trip from Il to WV to Columbia, SC to Jacksonville, FL was the Military campground at FT Jackson in Columbia. Very nice. Spaces are mostly concrete pads with bbq and fire pit and picnic table. Water, sewer, 30 and 50 amp Wireless. Bath and showers were heated and very clean. View of the lake in the morning. Just great. Pelicans roost in Mayort or Jacksonville, was too military. Is a nice place but kinda crowded and we were on grass and no view but they had all the amenities, sewer, water, 30 and 50 amp. Cable and wireless, free washer dryers. Will be going back to Columbia in a month. Then on to Florida agian. We are house searching. Looking for a winter lakehouse. Need to get out of the winters here in thre north country.

sorry you had a bad experience here in my home state! you would have been MUCH happier at Red Top Mtn State Park.

Next time listen to an ole Ga. Boy who knows....Red Top is an outstanding State Park, we go there and only live ten miles away...its that good...There is also Sweetwater Park on Lake Allatoona also, it is a Corp of Engineeers Park...of GA. 20 about ten miles...very nice also..

we were there back in Jan, it took me 37 minutes from the end of my street to the visitor center parking lot! howdy neighbor!

thing about Sweetwater COE is it's not open yet. McKinney and Victoria Landing are the only two year round COE campgrounds. Of course Red Top Mtn is year round and a couple of private ones if that's an option someone would take. hopefully he'll have better luck his next trip! just hard to go wrong in any of our State Parks.
